Model UN Conference

On Wednesday 15th August Warrnambool College was the host school for a Model United Nations Conference (MUNC) addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ‘Zero Hunger’. Participants from Brauer College, Hawkesdale P 12 College, Mortlake College, Portland Secondary College and Trinity College in Colac joined our 68 student delegates as representatives of 30 different UN Member States to amend a Draft Resolution in a simulation of the General Assembly with the goal of “Ending Global Poverty and Addressing Universal Food Security”.

The DET-SPP sponsored event was administered by the Victoria Division of the United Nations Association of Australia with Professor Ian Howie serving as the Honourable Secretary-General and formal Chair of proceedings to guide students through four key sessions over the course of the day: Position Statements, The Caucus, Amendments and a Final Resolution Vote. By a small margin, a new UN Resolution was voted in after some amazing negotiation and diplomacy skills were on display.

The experience was invaluable, with all participants gaining a better understanding of the importance of international diplomacy, sustainable development and a global perspective.  As noted by Professor Ian Howie in his closing address:

“The UN is not perfect, but it is the best tool that we currently have to tackle complex world issues.”
