Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning has been full steam ahead with lots of work completed and more to be done!

Dan Tehan visited our Hands on Learning students in week 1 of term 3. Dan showed genuine interest in the community projects the students are currently involved in (painting Food Share Trolleys, making seats and tables for Tower Hill reserve, constructing the sets for Warrnambool College production Strictly Ballroom), together with our aquaponics system.  This was a great opportunity for our students to really showcase themselves and what they achieve in Hands on Learning to a member of parliament.

To elaborate on what our students have been working on throughout Term 2 and so far in Term 3, here is a run down:

  • Constructing and painting a set piece for Warrnambool College school production Strictly Ballroom.  Some of our students were also lucky enough to see the production and view their masterpiece up on stage.
  • Sanding and painting trolleys for Food Share.
  • Maintaining our aquaponics system and goldfish.
  • Growing, planting and harvesting vegetables in our outdoor garden and aquaponics.
  • Constructing a new gutter garden from recyclable materials.
  • Working on individual projects such as constructing bedside tables, coffee tables, pallet chairs, pencil boxes, wine racks, tool boxes and dog kennels.
  • Rebuilding an old Pee Wee 50 motorbike.

Our next big project for Term 3 will be building picnic tables and chairs in collaboration with Worn Gundidj Aboriginal Co-operative through a successful grant provided by South West Community Foundation.  Once the picnic tables and chairs have been constructed, we will deliver them in Term 4 to Tower Hill where they will be located around the visitor centre rotunda.  Students have been busy calculating and planning for the timber we require to construct the pieces which were delivered to us this week.

We continue to be amazed by the growth and determination our students show in Hands on Learning.
