Visual Arts – Photography
On Monday 8th May, students participating in year 9 Photography embarked on an excursion to the Festival of Photography at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in the city.
Students had the opportunity to view both traditional and contemporary photographs where artists used manual and digital techniques and presented their photographs in a variety of different formats. This exhibition provided a lot of inspiration for our young photographers.
After viewing the exhibition, students completed a photo challenge using their own devices. Students applied the technical and compositional rules they have learnt over the semester to produce some fantastic photos with the intention of capturing the ‘Essence of Melbourne’.
Thanks to Natalie Kosnar and Sarah Ritche for assisting on the day.

Debating
On April 27, the second round of the inter-school debating competition was held at Tintern Grammar. Ringwood Secondary College had four teams competing, of which three came away with wins. Our C grade team, made up of Jackson Mangold, Akanksha Singh and Caitlin Dellow, contested the topic ‘That we should restrict urban sprawl’. Arguing for the negative team, they won by 3 points, and Akanksha was awarded best speaker for the debate.
Of our three D grade teams, two had one-point victories, and the other a one-point loss. All students spoke well, but Clinton Bouphasavanh and Hayley Brown were awarded best speaker in their respective debates. Other students involved were Renee Egan, Samuel Rhodes, Skye Mazella, Gemma Caldecoat, Megan Rennick, Tia Olsen and Elizabeth Brooks.
Congratulations to everyone involved on a successful night for Ringwood!

Year 7 Da Vinci Decathlon: Fantastic Results!
On Monday, 15th May, our two Da Vinci teams of 16 Year 7 students met at Ringwood station on a cold, foggy morning at 7.30am to make their way to the challenging Da Vinci Decathlon held at Camberwell Grammar. Students competed in an academic inter-school gala day run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon, with events/challenges in 10 academic disciplines. This was the first of the regional events held in Melbourne, and 20 teams had entered: 18 teams from private schools and 2 teams from Ringwood SC.
Our teams were amazing and we were the only State school in attendance. Students had to work in their teams to complete a number of highly challenging tasks:
Session 1: Science, English, Art & Poetry, and Ideation
Session 2: Maths, Cartography, and Creative Producers
Session 3: General Knowledge, Code Breaking, and Engineering
Our teams:
Da Vinci Team 1:
Charlotte Jackson 7A, Brooke Humphreys & Jessica Suares 7F, Sue Kumar 7H, and Cade Cavanagh, Tom Jackson, Aidan Maher & Nathan Agache 7I.
Da Vinci Team 2:
Liam Denholm & Lachlan Moroney 7A, Caitlin Dowding, Johanna Feeney & Isabel Kenworthy 7H, and Emma Hanly, Shion Kim & Eve Maskell 7I.
Results:
Da Vinci Team 1:
Gained 3rd place in the Art & Poetry Task; and 5th place in Creative Producers (create a 60 second dramatic performance based on ‘the power of money’). Fantastic effort!
Da Vinci Team 2:
Gained 3rd place in the Engineering Task (design & construction task); 2nd place in Ideation (solve real world problem); and won 1st place in Creative Producers. They were then required to perform their winning Creative Producers task in front of the other teams. Fantastic achievement!
These students have been an absolute delight to work with over the last 5 weeks in preparation for Monday’s challenge, and were brilliant ambassadors for the college, working together in the spirit of the Da Vinci Challenge, as well as beating many private school teams in several of the challenges. Congratulations!
