From Matilda, Year 3 teacher

Artist visit

On Friday the 9th of June, 3A were lucky enough to have a visit from Matilda's Mum, Margaret Dix. Margaret is a Sydney based artist and she drove all the way to Melbourne to visit Matilda and her class. She brought with her sketch books, studies (mini-painting drafts), objects and artifacts that spark her curiosity, and a bag full of fresh cotton.

Margaret goes camping in the bush and paints what she sees. Each time she goes camping, she makes sure to research the traditional owners of the land she visits, and pays her respects to Aboriginal elders past, present and emerging. She recently went camping on Kamilaroi land in Moree, NSW, where there are enormous cotton fields. She told 3A about the process cotton goes through before it becomes clothes that we can wear, and passed around cotton buds for everyone to feel.

Matilda interviewed Margaret about what inspires her, her creative process, and the lessons she has learned along the way. 3A asked many interesting and insightful questions. We all learned so much from one another - it was a very special visit!
