Wagga Diocesan Netball

Well done to Kate Wallace (Year 12), Chloe Turnbull (Year 11) and Emily McPherson (Year 10) who played for the Wagga Diocesan netball team at the Open NSWCCC trial on Tuesday at Menai in Sydney. They all played extremely well.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Emily who was selected in the NSWCCC Open team. This is a phenomenal achievement especially considering Emily is only in Year 10. Emily will play for NSWCCC later in the year against the NSW Combined High Schools team and NSW Combined Independent Schools team. We wish her the very best of luck!

On Wednesday, Kildare participated in the Riverina Division of the CCC Cochrane Cup Rugby League competition at McDonald’s park in Wagga.

KCC had 2 fixtures during the day and remained undefeated.

In the first game  KCC were up against their fiercest rival Mater Dei CC. This fixture always has a lot of feeling and both teams were keen to earn bragging rights with a victory.

The first half was a hard fought affair with both teams playing with passion and enthusiasm, although both found it difficult to gain the ascendancy due to difficult playing conditions and too many unforced errors. Despite these obstacles, KCC went into halftime with a relatively unconvincing lead of 10 to nil.

However, the 2nd half was completely different. KCC gained the early ascendancy and never looked like being defeated, piling on 22 unanswered points to win the game 32-0 with a very dominant display in attack and defence. A great team effort with special mentions to Captain Kobe Gustowski, Jackson Murdoch, Kaden Dowling and Jimmy Smith for some excellent individual contributions.

This victory set up a Grand Final fixture v St Francis De Sales College from Leeton. St Francis had had a similar dominant victory v Marian CC from Griffith. This set up what would be a well matched GF with both teams expecting victory.

The first half was once again played in very difficult, wet and slippery playing conditions. As a result neither side was completing their sets in attack and therefore taking advantage of opportunities the other side was providing them. KCC’s chances took a further blow when our front rower was given 10 minutes in the sin bin. However, despite being down to 12 players, KCC managed to score just prior to halftime and somehow go to the break at 4 all.

The halftime break and re-focus was obviously what the KCC side required prior to the 2nd half. The 2nd half they were a completely different outfit. Their defence went to another level, they started to complete their attacking sets and dominate field position. This turned the game into KCC’s favour and they were rewarded on the scoreboard going out to a lead of 18-4. Despite switching off too early and having a nervous few final minutes, KCC held on and finished the game as 18-12 victors to become Riverina Zone Champions for the Cochrane Cup.

Once again and wonderful team effort with the whole squad extremely happy to secure the well deserved victory and title against a big, physical St Francis team. Special mentions in the 2nd fixture must go to once again Kobe Gustowski for an excellent Captains game, the whole pack but notably Lachie Walsh, Seb Osorio-Bradley and Jimmy Smith. In the backs, Aussie Rules players Hayden DFonohuie and Fletcher Nimmo showed they had plenty of Rugby league ability and were ably supported by new Fullback Louie Mortimer.
