Frog Bog revamp one step closer

Lyn from Sunbury Bunnings visited this week to deliver a pond which will be used to remodel the frog pond so we can extend the bog part of the frog bog.

If you are interested in being involved in this great project, please let Libby or Chris Wiseman know.

Chris and Libby will hold a short frog pond planning meeting 10:00am Wednesday 21 June. We would love your input on the revamp.

Lynn also provided the school with some bird baths and a $100 gift voucher.

We thank Bunnings for their recognition of the sustainability work we are doing and their ongoing support of our efforts.

Newham Beanie Project

As part of our 'dress for the weather' campaign, the school is hoping to purchase some customised Newham Beanies. The beanies would be red and black with 'Newham' written on them. Suitable for all ages and all Newham residents! If any parents/carers would like to help with this project, please let the office know.

River Detectives

Just in case you hadn't heard, Newham Primary School will be starting the River Detectives water monitoring in term 3 as our testing kit is arriving next week. Once a month, the water from our Deep Creek tributary adjacent to the school, and from Five Mile Creek at Woodend, will be tested and compared. The two waterways are from two different water authorities; Melbourne Water and North Central Catchment Authority. It will be interesting to see how the health of the waterways compare.

It is a great opportunity if any parents/carers who have a passion for our waterways, and are keen to work with our students on either a Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 10:00am once a month. Libby Fullard will collect the sample from Five Mile Creek and the students will collect a sample of water from the tributary. The samples will be tested for pH and reactive phosphorous levels, turbidity, temperature and electrical conductivity (salinity) using a range of instruments and solutions from the River Detectives kit. The data will be entered onto the River Detectives portal for monitoring. During the warmer months the students will also undertake waterbug sampling and habitat surveys of the areas alongside the waterways.
