Though Term 2 has been short, it has been packed full of incredible work in the Art and Technology Department.

I stepped in to the role of head of the department as Ms Rumble has commenced her Maternity leave and we welcomed Ms Jerecic, Mr Orwin and Miss Lee to our team to teach our incredible classes after we said goodbye for now to Ms Fiorentino.

We have had our Year 7 and 8 students completing yet another term of Technology rotations and producing some amazing products such as Flashing Light circuits, Habitat Boxes and an assortment of delicious foods.

In Art, students have been learning the basics of Art Elements and Principles and even stepping up to create their own font and Milk Carton packaging!

Our Year 9 and 10 students have completed the first term of their semester elective and they are all well under way with their making.

Ms Jerecic’s Year 9/10 Textiles class have all made some incredible garments, check out that dress made from plastic bags, below.

Mr Leithhead and Mr Qi’s Systems classes have been building bases for their Autonomous cars and trialling some interesting modifications.

Ms Baillie’s class have been working hard on their robots, with some interesting Lego creations to go with it.

Ms Fiorentino and Miss Lee’s photography class have been taking and developing some incredible photographs and learning how to manipulate different aspects of their craft.

Miss Flandez has been learning how to sculpt a slab of clay into something amazing before firing it in the kiln. We also posted a sneak peak of what they have been doing on our Instagram. For the first time, their work will be included in the Art & Tech Showcase this year!

Our VCE classes have made it through their first Unit of the year and have started to make some great progress for their SAT work. These students are all working hard to prep for our upcoming Art and Tech Showcase. We will have more on the work they are producing throughout the year.  Follow us on Instagram for updated on their work!

We are very excited by what our students are producing and equally excited to see what next term holds. Keep an eye out for more details about this year’s Art and Technology Showcase which is happening in November.

We would like to thank EACH and Uniting for their support in accepting our Soft Toy donations from Year 8 Textiles.

Year 7

Our year 7’s have worked this term, completing their Make a Difference project! As you may have seen in previous newsletters, our Year 7 project requires students to look at real world issues and the Sustainable Development goals developed by the UN. They use their research into these issues to develop a product (including simple machines and systems) that will attempt to solve the problem. Students did some great thinking outside the  box and managed to create:

  • models to represent underwater vacuums that take the rubbish out of our oceans to protect our marine lift,
  • spray canisters that remove unwanted items in an instant,
  • sustainable cars, and so much more!

Our Year 7’s should be proud of what they have achieved, we can’t wait to see what next term’s students produce.

Year 8

Circuitry is our topic in Year 8 and students have definitely experienced some frustrating times when learning how to solder and get components to attach! Students were tasked with using resistors, LED’s, capacitors, transistors, and various wires to construct a circuit that has 2 flashing LED’s. These are then embedded in a character design they have made from plywood that attaches to the front. With some design challenges and struggles along the way, our students have persevered and created some incredible designs. Check out how creative they have been, we can’t wait to see what is made next term!

Textiles

The second term for students was short but very productive. Students learnt different techniques of designing, styling and sewing. Applying hand and machine sewing skills, students produced a great variety of different products.

Year 7 students made Bunting flags with their preferred designs of their favourite food, space and holiday imaginings.

Year 8 students made a collection of soft toys for donations to the charity, Hospital and Children in Foster Care. This is an ongoing goodwill project and students really understood the importance of the project.

Year 9 and 10 budding Young Fashion Designers produced a great collection of Hoodies and we look forward to presenting their work during the Fashion show coming up in the near future.

Year 9 and 10 Product Design and Technology class were working on the Quirky Couture recycling project. In small groups, students produced innovative dresses and accessories originating from recycled materials. Thinking out of the box there were great design ideas which students will be excited to share at the coming Fashion show.

Having the opportunity to teach all of the classes has been a pleasure this term and fun to be part of.  Well done Textile students!!!
