Term 2 Interschool Sport Report

In the last weeks of Term 2 and the early weeks of Term 3 we have multiple sports teams competing at Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) Sports. These teams include:

  • Cross country
  • Senior Boys AFL
  • Intermediate Boys AFL
  • Junior Girls AFL
  • Intermediate Mixed Badminton
  • Boys Netball (all years)

On a very cold and wet Monday, the Year 7 and 8 Junior Girls footy team went to Elgar Park to compete in the Eastern Metropolitan Regional competition after making it straight through the Knox District competition.

Playing as a team together for the first time, the girls were amazing and began to gel as a team as the games went on. They first played Kew and played a great game and won. Next, they played against Wheeler’s Hill and won again. The last of the 'Pool A' games was another great game against Lilydale and the girls got another win, securing their place in the grand final. The grand final was against 'Pool B' winners, Ringwood.  It was a great contest and a very close match but unfortunately the girls controversially went down by 2 points.

Overall, it was a great day from the girls, the improvement from the first training session to the last game was amazing to watch and something to be proud of. Shout out to Khloe, who suffered an injury in the third game, we wish you a very speedy recovery.

Hailey Buckley & Ella Peach, Year 10 Coaches

We've also had students participate in Girls Netball, and Boys Soccer. These sports days couldn’t go ahead without our amazing staff coaches so we would like to thank them and acknowledge them. We also want to acknowledge all the students participating in these events and we wish them all the best at the next round!

Year 7 Soccer

On Wednesday 31 May, the Year 7 Soccer team went out to Knox Park to compete against Rowville East, Rowville West, Upwey, Scoresby College and Heritage College Knox. We had 17 participants that were very excited to play our first game against Heritage College Knox.

Both teams played well and the game ended up in a draw (2-2). Our captain, Joel Suk, kicked both of our goals. Our second game was against Rowville East. Even though our players were tired, we kept on going. Unfortunately, we lost but we defended well enough to make it to the third-place play-off against Scoresby College.

Our players had a break going into this match and continued to be enthusiastic. We were all trying our hardest to win this game, which we ended up doing (5-0). Adam Eltobgy scored a hat-trick (3 goals) and Sean McCabe scored 2. We came 3rd out of 6 teams. I am very grateful for being able to participate in coaching a year 7 team and having a wonderful day with them. Jayden Shamsedini, Yr 10 Coach

Year 7 Girls Netball

On Wednesday 31 May, three Year 10 students and nineteen excited, but nervous, Year 7 students headed to Knox Regional Netball Centre for a Round Robin against other local schools including Upwey, Rowville, and Heritage College.

Both our teams put on an outstanding display of netball throughout the day and all put their best foot forward in the cold and windy conditions. For some students, it was their first time representing Wantirna College out on Sport, to which they did an excellent job!

Our 1’s team did a fantastic job in all of their games, only going down to Rowville East in a thriller game. Our 2’s put on a fantastic display winning majority of their games as well. Both teams improved their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship significantly throughout the day, all while having a blast.

Thank you to Janelle Cavarra who ran try-outs and training, but was not able to attend on the day. An additional thank you to our student coaches Tahlia, Natasha and Steph who did a fantastic job organising and guiding the girls.

Year 9 Lifestyle – Body Systems Unit of Learning

One of the Health and Physical Education electives in Year 9 is Lifestyle Fitness. In Unit 2 ‘Body Systems’, students learn about 4 of the main bodily systems: Muscular, Skeletal, Cardiovascular and Respiratory systems.

Students begin their learning in the classroom, being explicitly taught about the components, structure, and functions of each system. They then complete learning activities such as ‘Mix n Match’, Flash cards and Fitness Relays. In recent classes this term, the Year 9 Lifestyle for Fitness Girls utilised the opportunity to apply their learning outside of the classroom.

Retrieval Practice Activity 1 - Diagrams

Students were required to draw and label each of the body systems on the bottom downball courts with chalk. First, students completed each system by retrieving as much from their memory as they could without their notes or teacher prompt. Then Miss McLennan assisted each group by providing prompts to students using what they had already retrieved. Students were able to continue adding to their diagrams. Finally, students could use their notes to assist them with labelling any other components they had missed. The class feedback included that they enjoyed the challenge, the sun and music while applying their learning.

Retrieval Practice Activity 2 – Fitness Relay

Students were put into small teams of 5 to compete against each other to win retrieval practice fitness relays! Students were given a list of exercises to complete in their teams during the relay. For example, 5 push ups, 10 lunges, 10 star jumps and 20 toe taps.

In turns, one team member would run to the end of the court, complete the exercise, then identify and write one component of the chosen system for the round. They would then run back, and high-five their next teammate whose turn it was to run to complete the next exercise and identify another component.

As students completed their poster during the relay, it became more challenging because difficult components were generally the last remaining. Prompting was given to assist students to use the strategies taught in class to remember the components.

First team to finish correctly filling in the poster, wins! All students were exhausted but pleased with their efforts. A wonderful hands-on learning activity enjoyed by all.

Thist term, students completed HIIT training as part of their Reflective Training  Folio Assessment. Such a hard working class!

Rebel Knox Shopping Spree

On Wednesday 7 June, we found out about an incredible opportunity to  win a $1000 Rebel shopping spree for our College - but the catch was that we only had a few hours to garner the most likes and shares of our Facebook post promoting the Rebel Knox Grand Opening event.

So, at 2:30pm, with only a few hours until the deadline, we decided to have a crack at it and put the call out to all our community to please help us get the most Likes & Shares - and our community did not disappoint. Facebook Likes an Shares went up and up and up.  At 6pm, the competition closed and we sent a photo of our FB post showing 263 Likes and 87 Shares.

The next day, we were THRILLED to learn that we had won by a slim margin! A HUGE THANK YOU to our awesome Wantirna College Community for pulling together to make this happen at short notice and with only three and a half hours!
