Term 3 Pos Ed Day

By Natasha Eshuis
Our most recent Positive Education Day was another success for our school in terms of building community, growing our students and developing values for life.
With a focus on Positive Relationships and Positive Purpose, the aim was to teach students the impact of healthy relationships and the purpose of having goals in life to work towards.
The day started with bonding activities within each of the individual year levels, exploring what is the best way to communicate, how to cultivate healthy conversations and the most appropriate way to interact with people in our lives. It was a great opportunity for students to ask questions about relationships, particularly intimate relationships. Some year levels split the genders for a deeper discussion. Students commented on the morning session as ‘awesome’! Others said ‘the speakers were so honest with us’ and ‘it was really inspiring to listen to!’.
This was followed by a whole school gathering in the gym, to watch the leadership team and Mr Allen Dickson act out ‘The Allen Show’. This included a comedy routine, games, audience participation, an ‘awesometastic’ Christian speaker, Peter Botross and a great time exploring how to ‘fill each other’s buckets’.
We each have a bucket that we carry around; when we encourage each other or do something to help each other, we fill that person’s bucket and our own. However, when we communicate in negative ways we actually ‘dip’ out of other peoples' buckets. The less you have in your bucket, the lower you feel emotionally and this can then have an effect on day to day functioning. We encouraged students to think about their words and actions and the consequence it can have on their bucket and others' buckets.
In the afternoon, the Secondary School was split into various activities with all ages interacting together. During this time, all the activities encouraged fun, learning about each other, competition, exercise, exploring safety in relationships and more.
A different approach to lunch was taken in that students shared food together and ate meals together. For we know that when you eat and enjoy food you are delighting in God’s creation; but we are also called to serve: to be a blessing and cultivate delight for others. What a delight it was to see all the students serving each other and spending quality time together over a meal.
Overall, it was lovely seeing the positive input of so many speakers and see students connecting with each other on a whole new level. That’s got to be gold for the students!
To continue our Positive Relationships and ‘filling each other’s buckets’ we are now awarding students for positive behaviours each fortnight with movie tickets to our local cinema, Cameo, in Belgrave.
