Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 1/Week 1-2

2021

Writing

This week students read a couple of Chapters of 'Staying Alive in Grade 5' by John Marsden. Each grade created a class story about 'Why Grade 5 isn't a boring grade'. Students then created their own story. They have also listened to part of the online story, 'Nothing ever happens on 90th Street' by Roni Schotter. There was a class discussion to follow about 'Nothing ever happens at BPS - What if...' Students invented their own fabulous ideas and shared them with the class. They were then given the opportunity to write their own 'What if...' story.

Next week, we will start setting up our Writer's Notebooks.

Reading

This week in reading students and teachers have been setting up routines. We have been sharing the books we read on the school holidays. Students have completed book reviews and shared them with their peers. We have introduced our NEW classroom libraries to the students and will continue setting them up with the students over the coming week. Students will investigate how to choose a GOOD FIT book.

Maths

This week in Maths, students have been working on collating data and then graphing their information.  Students were also honing their collaborative skills whilst working on the "The Bridge" problem solving task. Next week students will complete assessments across all 3 strands of Mathematics.

Inquiry

This week in UOI students were introduced to our first unit of the year which explores peace and justice. Students' participated in a 'graffiti walk' and looked at a range of images and made connections between their lives, the images and current affairs. We also looked at the Sustainable Development Goals and begun discussing the role that we play in addressing and overcoming problems in society; 'think global, act local'.
