NAIDOC Day

This year ASC held a special NAIDOC (National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee) event on Friday 27 November. We had been unable to do our usual celebration of NAIDOC in the first week of July because of Covid restrictions.

The Aboriginal Education Team (AbEd) took charge of NAIDOC activities and came up with a day full of fun activities to acknowledge our First Nations people and the significance of NAIDOC.

The day included a banner painted for the 2020 NAIDOC theme: Always Was, Always Will Be.  This theme coincides with claims for Native Title and Land Rights.

Activities included flag-raising by students, bead making, earth art, face painting, an art competition, boomerang paintings, chalk art in the COLA, outdoor activities, rock art. We also had a free lunch-time BBQ for all the school.

Merit certificates were awarded to our helpers for the day: Tykeisha Collins, Kendall Bradley, Patricia Dixon, Evelyn Ward, David Green, Haylei Moore-Douglass, Chloe Gibson, Faith Ahoy, Charlotte Scales, Kelvin Kongo, Kaleb Smith, Chipiki Pittman, Blake Livermore, Sebastian Weinert, Morris Collins, Dion Whitfield, Kara Hancock and David Ahoy.

Our ASC cleaner, Mrs Lyn Lockwood, was also presented with a bunch of flowers and acknowledgement of her long service (42 years) here at Duval and ASC.

We would like to thank our Aboriginal Education team, Mrs Webb, and other staff that participated in the activities.

Yours sincerely and happy NAIDOC from the ASC AbEd team.
