ASC Football

Wellbeing Cup

After a great day of friendly cross-town rivalry and pulsating football, ASC has successfully regained the Wellbeing Cup from O'Connor Catholic College.

The day began with the girls participating in an elite training session by NRL Development Officers. This was followed by splitting into relevant age groups and playing in combined teams.

The under-13s boys (ASC 12 - OCC 4) was an exciting game of football, with Hugo Fittler crashing over the line to seal the game close to the final whistle. Nathaniel Daley-Cutmore was awarded Player of the Match in his debut in team sports. His damaging runs up the middle and perfect textbook tackling proved to make the difference between the two teams.

The under-16s boys (ASC 22- OCC 6) were a great advertisement for schoolboy rugby league with both sets of coaching pleased with the level of skills and sportsmanship on display. Tensely locked 10-6 at half-time, the ASC boys managed to pull away from OCC under draining heat conditions. New to rugby league, Oliver Freeman set the game alight with his electrifying runs. However, it was the experienced Rari Widders-Lockwood who was voted ASC's Player of the Match, showing his class in the second half to help the team wrap up a well-deserved win.

Representative players

This year has been a test for us all. However, I would like everyone to spare a thought of some of our students have who missed out chances of school sporting representative selection this year because of Covid disruptions. Several of our students were in with a probable chance to win the sky-blue jersey of NSW CHS for rugby league, rugby union or rugby 7s. Those students who have finished Year 12 will sadly not have that chance again.

However, on a higher note, ASC is well positioned to provide our football-minded students the opportunity to gain higher honours next year, including the possibility of a career in sport. For example, at ASC this year we had:

  • 48 girls play in the Friday Night Regional Competition, with women’s rugby being the fastest growing professional sport in the world;
  • 25 boys play in the combined Armidale team for the Friday Night Regional competition;
  • in our late flurry of rugby league, a further 52 boys put their hands up to pull on an ASC jersey and compete against other schools from our region.

Coach's final word ...

As can been demonstrated, there is enormous demand and a huge pool of talented league and union players here at ASC.

Due to the workings of the transfer system of the Department of Education I am moving to Guyra Central School next year. I will greatly miss my involvement in ASC football and look forward to following the exploits of the ASC footy squads in 2021.

It has been my honour and pleasure in working with staff, students and parent at ASC. Thanks.
