First Aid News

First Aid

If a student presents at sickbay saying they are unwell, our administration staff, who are trained in First Aid will do an initial assessment.  Most will require a short rest or a paracetamol (if appropriate, and we have parental consent to administer) and the student will return to class.  If there is the slightest concern, parents/guardians are contacted and asked to collect their child at their earliest convenience.  The First Aid staff must be the one who contacts the parent asking for them to be collected (not the student).

If your child presents with a head injury, no matter how minor, the parent/guardian is always notified in case of possible complications.

Anaphylactic Students

Students who are diagnosed with Anaphylaxis are required to provide the school with an EpiPen and an Action Plan, which is kept at Morey Reception for Senior School or Junior School Reception.  Generic EpiPens are kept in the Gymnasium, Naunton Family Building, Morey Reception and Junior School Reception.  All staff at Girton Grammar School are trained in the recognition and signs of an anaphylactic episode, and how to use an EpiPen.  If there is any excursion where the child is taken off-site the staff member responsible arranges for the applicable EpiPen to be collected and signed out when leaving, and signed back in again afterwards.

Those students who are diagnosed as Anaphylactic are listed in the Administration Handbook which is distributed to all staff each Term.  This includes their picture, Year Level and details of their specific allergy. These details are also displayed in all the Staff rooms so that staff are aware of students with anaphylaxis.  Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology (ASCIA) do not advise the school ban specific foods as this can give the student a false sense of security and it is impossible to implement.  Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their food allergy and never to share food.
