Girton Cricketers Rise Up

On Tuesday 12th March, Girton’s Year 7 & 8 Boys Cricket team participated in the Sandhurst Schools Cricket Championship. After winning through to the final with a dominant display against Castlemaine Secondary College in the earlier match, the boys were perhaps even more impressive in the final against Catherine McCauley College. Despite eventually going down in a tightly fought contest, the boys brought their very best to the big stage in the final. Despite their highly ranked opponents, the boys bowled and fielded with discipline and tenacity, restricting CMC to a very gettable 129. Despite an attack that included many representative cricketers and one boy who played BDCA A grade, the Girton team were right up for the fight. In following the instructions to dig in, and put a high price on their wickets, the Girton boys occupied the crease with poise and composure; watchfully defending the good balls, then dispatching anything loose to the boundary. Eventually running out of overs (falling 31 runs short) every one of the Girton boys should hold his head high for the spirited team performance on the day. Captain Liam Jones said after the day’s play that he was thrilled with his team’s determination and application all day. ‘I was thrilled with grabbing the win against Castlemaine. Our boys were very good, with the bat especially and we deserved the win. In the final I don’t think we could’ve done any more. They had some star players in their side and I thought the Girton boys really stood up to the challenge. We were beaten by the better side, but we fielded and bowled really well to hold them, then fought really hard with the bat which was pleasing’

Better performers for Girton in the final included:

  • Wasik Ajmain who picked up 3 wickets with his leg-spin
  • Captain Liam Jones who shone again with a brilliant 47 no
  • Fraser McKinistry who batted with courage for a fine 28

Better Performers in the earlier victory against Castlemaine Secondary College:

  • Liam Jones: 55 retired
  • Henry Rathjen: 35
  • Jeremy Coulsen: 2/15
