Term 2, Week 6

Home Learning

Home Learning

As always, thank you for your support as we continue with remote learning. Although we can see the light at the end of the tunnel - we still have a few more weeks of Home Learning to complete. We will continue to provide more opportunities for optional extension tasks as the term progresses - for example the Optional Extras grid, which has been sent out the last couple of weeks.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. We have adjusted the timetable to include extra sessions this week, but they may be in a different order to last week, to help best support the students' learning.

DAILY REFLECTIONS:

At the end of each day, we have asked the students to reflect on their work for that day. This will be through the Google Classroom and teachers will be using this information to help mark the school roll, to ensure all students are engaging with home learning tasks. If possible, please remind your child to complete this task. We  recommend setting an alarm reminder for 2:45pm.

English

Reading

This week, we will be reading Chapter 7 of Running Wild. Not too many chapters to go! Just like previous weeks, the students will then complete a word study related to vocabulary from the chapter. From now on, they only need to complete work for four vocab words. After this, they will be creating a user guide for how to live in the jungle (learning from Will's successes and mistakes). The students can use any medium to present their work, however, they will need to make sure they make reference to the text with quotes or ideas from previous chapters.

Writing

This week, students will continue learning effective research skills. They are learning how to identify fake news and misinformation while using online sources. Students will be critical thinkers by analysing a variety of sources to determine their credibility.

Next week, we will consolidate what we have learned about online researching strategies by gathering information for an information report. Students will choose their own topic which will relate to ‘taking action’ to tie in with our  Unit Of Inquiry unit

Write2Read Codes

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. They will continue to learn about Rule 6 through the bootcamp" lessons, where the students practice the new skill or information over a period of 2 weeks until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

We have reduced some of the expectations of Reading and Writing tasks to provide 15-20mins for the students to work on their rules each day.

Mathematics

This week in mathematics, students will be able to convert metric units of capacity, mass, and length from and to milli, centi, and kilos. They will also be learning about the history and the significance of the metric system and how this is used in real life. Extension tasks and resources are also provided.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, students will be focusing on learning new skills and creating a project proposal to reduce rubbish around our yard this week. Students will perform skills stated on the slides and write down the steps in chronological order. Students will brainstorm ideas we can do as a school to reduce rubbish around the yard. Students will write a project proposal using the attachment sheet to unpack and explain your school rubbish initiative. Students will create a video explaining and promoting your school rubbish initiative

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students through their iNewsletter which can be accessed from here or the link the Specialists will send out each week.

Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
