School Term Ends

Friday is the last day of term.  It is not an optional attendance day, as previously published in the Communicate.

Term 3 resumes on Monday 20 July.

Behind The News

Our Aquaponics program and Stage 4 students were featured on BTN this week. It was a great reflection of some of the learning that happens at Good Shepherd! Check out the video here.

Growing Faith at Home

It is a wonderful experience to be welcomed somewhere. The words ‘I feel comfortable/ safe/ at home’, come to mind. It opens the door to connection, honest conversations and relationship!

But when you think of it, there is more involved than putting a welcome door mat out the front and hoping that it will do the job. It takes time, words and action. The blessings are definitely worth it, but a personal investment is involved.

This week Growing Faith at Home resources talk about ‘Welcoming Others’. Maybe now is the ideal time to check out and implement some of their ideas!

What is MulitLit? How can I help?

Are you looking for a way to help at Good Shepherd? Do you have a spare 30 minutes a week to assist students with their reading?

We are currently looking for volunteers to train to become MultiLit reading tutors. You can come at any time that suits you, once a week or more. Training for this program will take place on Wednesday 22nd July in the Brainforest (Library) from 8:30am until 9:15am.

MultiLit is a reading intervention program that has been used at Good Shepherd for a number of years, it involves students working through two books at their own individual level. Volunteers (reading tutors) receive training and support in the program, these volunteers are made up of parents, our Lutheran School Officers (LSO’s) and myself. The program runs until the students complete both books. We currently have approximately 50 students from Years 3 to 6on the MultiLit program. We have found the program to be greatly successful.

MultiLit is based on teaching word attack skills. When teaching students with difficulties to become independent readers, teaching phonic word attack skills is an essential component of any literacy intervention program. These skills help students to decode text by associating sounds with letters or groups of letters. The three components of Word Attack Skills are accuracy, fluency and spelling. It should be noted that the teaching intervention used in Word Attack Skills is explicit and systematic and takes a ‘synthetic’ approach in line with contemporary best practice. There is no homework for this program.

Please register your interest by emailing myself anne.carter@gspv.sa.edu.au for the training on Wednesday 22nd July. I look forward to working with you all as we continue to support the students at Good Shepherd with their learning.
