Happy Reading

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome back! It has been great to see all our students back at school ready to learn with their classmates and teachers again in actual classrooms.

Many students have been returning books they borrowed before the lockdown and it’s pleasing to see many more borrowing again for the upcoming school holidays. We remind students to check their bags and rooms and return any outstanding books to the return chute in the library ASAP.

Students are also reminded to check the Library Resources folder in School Resources on Compass. There are lots of links to the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, in-house videos on our favourite books, information on how to log on to the Wheelers platform to borrow ebooks and audiobooks, book recommendation lists, information on how to create bibliographies and many more.

Eleven-year-old Isabella’s parents are divorced, so she has to switch lives every week: One week she’s Isabella with her dad, his girlfriend Anastasia, and her son Darren living in a fancy house where they are one of the only black families in the neighbourhood. The next week she’s Izzy with her mom and her boyfriend John-Mark in a small, not-so-fancy house that she loves.

Because of this, Isabella has always felt pulled between two worlds.  Her dad is black, her mum is white, and strangers are always commenting: You’re so exotic! You look so unusual. But what are you really? She knows what they’re really saying: You don’t look like your parents. You’re different. What race are you really?

Peta Lyre’s Rating Normal By Anna Whateley

Peta Lyre is far from typical. The world she lives in isn’t designed for the way her mind works, but when she follows her therapist’s rules for ‘normal’ behaviour, she can almost fit in without attracting attention. When a new girl, Sam, starts at school, Peta’s carefully structured routines start to crack.

But on the school ski trip, with romance blooming and a newfound confidence, she starts to wonder if maybe she can have a normal life after all. When things fall apart, Peta must decide whether all the old rules still matter. Does she want a life less ordinary, or should she keep her rating normal?
