9-12 Community News

It has been wonderful to welcome all our Years 9 and 10 students back to face to face learning this week. Our classrooms are once again full of energetic, engaged students and it is lovely to see so many smiling faces in the yard that is once again filled with laughter.

This week, we are delighted to share with you some of the amazing work that has been happening in the classrooms.

Year 11 Literature - Picnic at Hanging Rock - Descriptive Writing

A cool breeze that brings a summer smell of flowers and morning dew, flows through the busy moving girls, who are getting ready for lunch on a magnificent sunny day. They are all fully dressed from head to toe in their white frilly dresses, almost all conveying a smile. Some of the girls move in a hurry to set up, while others are already laying down on the green hued picnic blanket. The crunching of leaves underneath can be heard as the girls reach to grab their freshly packed sweets to fill them to the brim with sugar to sooth their aching stomachs on St Valentine's Day.

VCE Biology

Students have been busy back in the lab. The Unit 3 students have been studying immunity and growing bacteria. Students participated in a ‘gram stain’ to detect which bacteria they were studying. They also investigated the benefits of anti-bacterial soap and hand sanitiser. A very timely investigation and practical activity.

Year 12 Literature

Currently, Year 12 Literature students are writing on Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, responding to the prompt: Northanger Abbey challenges social roles and structures. Discuss (800-1200 words).  In this task, students must explore two perspectives and incorporate two additional readings to support these views. We are currently in the drafting process for the SAC and will continue to practise this piece for the end-of-year exam

Lily's Creation

Lily Mc – Year 10 spent her spare time during remote learning to construct this amazing quilt that is made from a large collection of ribbons that were awarded to her mother over a number of years. Lily created the design, taught herself to sew and created the quilt. This is the product of Lily’s ‘free choice’ folio task for Visual Arts. Lily was quite obviously inspired by her talented mum!

Year 11 Unit 1 Food Studies

Students have been investigating the impact that immigration has had on Australian cuisine. They have conducted research into foods and food preparation techniques introduced by immigrants over time and considered the resurgence of interest in indigenous food practices, while reflecting on whether Australia has developed a distinctive cuisine of its own. The practical component of the investigations complements the study and has provided students with opportunities to extend and share their research into a selected cuisine brought by migrants. Below are some photos of the dishes the students have prepared. These included Vietnamese Fried Rice from Paul, German Bratwurst and Sauerkraut by Reece, Indian Butter Chicken by Will, Spanakopita by Harrison, Chicken Kiev by Seth and Chicken Enchiladas by Blake.

VCAL Café

Our VCAL Café Team had another busy week. Along with running our weekly café, students have also provided a morning tea for our staff. Today, all College staff are participating in our ‘Staff Spirituality Day’. Staff were provided with a little package of ‘sweet treats’ lovingly made by the VCAL Team to enjoy for morning tea.

WEAR OUR UNIFORM WITH PRIDE!

A gentle reminder, as we return to on-site learning (and considerably colder weather!),  to wear our College uniform with pride. Please remember non-uniform items (including beanies and hoodies, long sleeve tops under polos, puffer jackets or alternative jumpers) are not acceptable. Please advise your TA or Community Leader Wellbeing if you are having difficulty, or require some assistance with, accessing uniform items. A reminder that uniform detention will commence again on Monday. Remember, your College uniform should be neat, clean and complete.

We thank our families for their assistance in relation to this matter.
