Refugee Week

It’s another day and another theme, welcome to Refugee Week!  Once again we will be remembering this event by reading some beautiful stories to learn more about the journeys that bring people to our beautiful country and to get our students to really think about how hard these experiences must be. Our feature book is the CBCA 2015 Picture Book of the Year, ‘My Two Blankets’ by Irena Kobald and illustrated by Freya Blackwood. This is a story about new beginnings and friendship in a strange new world. We’re looking at how the author and illustrator have used an old and new blanket as a metaphor to represent a new life, it’s a very special book.

Kinder will be reading ‘Grandma’s Treasured Shoes’ by Coral Vass, the author of ‘Sorry Day’ that we read a couple of weeks ago. This is another story that shows the journey of a little girl to her new home in Australia. The author has also used shoes as a metaphor which may be a little tricky for Kindies to understand but we’re going to have a go!

Our final Refugee Week story is the most unique one I’ve read, perhaps ever. ‘The Boat’ produced by SBS is an interactive graphic novel about escape after the Vietnam War. I’ve included the link to this fascinating story which I urge you to take a look at. Stage 3 are having a brief look but they've never seen anything like this, it’s so different.   The Boat

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The PRC is still going and closes on Friday, 28 August 2020. While there is still plenty of time to join and complete the challenge, if you’re finishing soon, please don’t forget to print off your reading log and return it to the library for me to validate. This week our PRC reading star is Will K, congratulations!

For more information about the PRC and the updated 2020 rules, please visit the PRC website.

New Series in the House!

Following a recommendation from one of our students, we’ve bought a new series for the library - The Nothing to See Here Hotel by Steven Butler. To read about these fun new books, read a review by Better Reading Australia here.

Reader of the Week

Meet Percy from KS, he was so excited to borrow his books this week! #htsreads

Quick Bits

No doubt I’ll embarrass my Year 8 Religious Education class, but they did such a great job with telling me why they love HTS. I hope you enjoy them too.

Happy reading,
