Numeracy

Fractions Basketball

The 5/6s have just concluded their unit on fractions, and what a way to end, than with a game of Fractions Basketball.  This activity, allows students to connect fractions with decimals and percentages.

How to Play

Students work in pairs and begin with 1 shot each, where they will record how many shots out of 2 they get in (e.g. 1/2). After this, the students investigate how much money they would receive out of $100, for each shot they got in and make it a percentage (e.g. $50= 50%). Next, they investigate how much money they would receive out of $1, for each shot they made, and make it a decimal (e.g. 50c = 0.5). Each round, students will add an extra shot in, allowing them to make connections with a wide range of fractions.

Learning outcomes that this task works towards

• Students can explain why a fraction (including its equivalent form) can  also be represented as a decimal and percentage.

• Students calculate the value of a fraction as a decimal and percentage,  including fractions where the numerator is more than one.

Here is video link of the game in action. It can be easily altered to suit a wide range of learning levels- see if you can set up a game of fractions basketball at home!

Have a great week!
