BrainSTEM Challenge

The power of inquiry-based learning

Throughout term 2 a group of students from Northcote High School have been participating in the BrainSTEM Innovation Challenge. Julia, Leo, Daniel and Bill from Year 9 were paired with a mentor, Dwan Price, from Deakin University. The group focussed their research on sustainability and developed a rating system that would inform consumers of the environmental impact of a product. They collected data from large companies and conducted a survey of the Northcote community to inform their rating system. At the end of the program the group presented their project, product and most importantly their experience, to other school groups in the program. The presentations took place via Zoom and were a great showcase of young minds and the power of inquiry-based learning.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the groups mentor, Dwan Price, for sharing her expertise and giving up countless hours of her time. Thanks also to the BrainSTEM group for facilitating such an amazing program and experience for our young people.

The next BrainSTEM Innovation Challenge begins in August and runs until November. If any students in Year 9 are interested in being a part of the challenge please see Ms Jacobs in the Design office, or email on lja@nhs.vic.edu.au.
