Embroidery, Felt & Fabric Painting

Embroidery and Felt Objects

Textiles Design students were keen to put their embroidery skills to work when we transitioned back into the classroom! It is always so exciting to see a planned design come to life with fabric! Students created a felti (flat felt object) using different embroidery techniques to add decoration or join applique (layers of felt) together. The year 8s later designed and created a 3D softie by adding stuffing between two panels of felt and used blanket stitch to secure the edges. The students were very proud of their efforts and results!

Fabric Painting

Year 9 Designers also explored fabric painting on calico (cotton fabric). This is a great technique to learn and consider fabric pattern design, but can also be approached in a traditional painterly style. Students had to research existing products of pillow covers to help them consider how they may create their own design. They then transferred their plan onto a piece of calico and applied the fabric painting techniques appropriate for executing their design. Don’t these look fantastic!
