SOMA CUBE Project

Student Reflections

The SOMA CUBE project is a puzzle that we had to create from scratch using individual unit blocks. The  SOMA CUBE puzzle consists of 27 unit blocks that we had to transform into seven different shapes following these rules: We could only use 3-4 cubes per shape, the shape had to have a right-angle and each cube had to be joined by a whole face. Before we were able to get to work on the puzzle, we had to learn how to sketch 3D cubes using isometric dotted paper. Once we finished our isometric drawings, we glued our unit blocks together to make the shapes we had drawn on our isometric paper. Once the shapes were glued, we then had to assemble our shapes into a 3-by-3 cube using as many different combinations as possible. It was a tricky project at first, but once we got the hang of it, we started to understand it better. - Lexie & Maya

As a year 7 student at The Lakes this term we learnt how to make and put together a  SOMA CUBE. A  SOMA CUBE is a puzzle made out of 27 smaller cubes made into 7 different shapes. With a soma cube all the shapes are different and you have to try and make a cube shape with them. As an added challenge we tried to make some of the other possible shapes with the soma cube peace’s.  Although it was a challenge all of the year 7 students enjoyed doing this task and can’t wait for our next challenge. - Kianah
