Selamat siang!“
Hello Sharks… my name is … and I’m here today to present to you my business…” This sentence could be heard multiple times across the Leadership Centre on Thursday as students, either in groups or individually, presented their business proposals to the Sharks (the teachers) in preparation for our first trading session of Earn and Learn - our financial maths unit. With the addition of these sessions, the Leadership centre is a hive of activity as students are learning new concepts, preparing a new business’ and getting ready for our end of year activities.
In continuing our unit on Gender and Identity for Wellbeing, students were engaged in a range of discussions around the idea of gender based violence. In learning to build and sustain positive gender relationships within our school and wider community, students discussed the types of violence that can occur - psychological, physical and verbal. In groups, they then determined what type of violence specific examples were such as cyber-bullying, hair pulling and pushing belonged to and what specific genders it stereotypically is involved with.
In Writing sessions this week, students continued on from the previous week's work in researching and preparing to write their Information Reports. They ensured that they used their plans to write a Sizzling Start and their first body paragraph on a major fact. It is great to see the broad range of topics under the umbrella of Climate Change that students have been able to research using the CARP method. Moving into this week students will finish writing their facts in two more paragraphs as well as ending their piece with impact before editing and publishing.
“Hmmm… that house looks good but it's a little bit expensive, and that one has a nice price but we could find something better.” “I wonder how much the Stamp Duty on that one would be? That’s a lot of money to pay for Lenders Mortgage Insurance!” “What type of bed do you want us to buy for you, a double, queen or king?” During Maths sessions this week, students played the role of mortgage broker and interior designer all in one. In exploring our Financial Maths unit, students learnt the process of calculating how much a house costs including the extra costs of stamp duty, lenders mortgage insurance and more. They explored realestate.com to see what types of houses were affordable with a $1.5 million budget and they also explored websites such as Amart, Early Settler, and Focus on Furniture to calculate how much they would be spending on interior furniture.
As mentioned above, this week’s Earn and Learn lessons involved a range of different activities. Before Thursday’s Shark Tank, students finalised their job applications including both a resume and a cover letter, as well as their business plans, all of which led up to our Shark Tank day. During our Shark Tank day students used their persuasive writing and public speaking skills to present their business proposal to the teachers - acting as sharks. Students provided the purpose of their business, the competitors they are up against, the type of target market they are after and what they are selling their products for. It was impressive to see students prepare QR codes and forms ready for their customers to obey the modern day COVID guidelines and the requests of investment they were after. After deliberation from the Sharks, students received their investment allocations and so began our first day of trading on Friday morning. Students set their business up in their specific areas within the classroom and began selling their respective products to their customers. A highlight was observing the students calculate their total earnings for the session and applying the rent, lighting and heating costs charged to their business as part of the unit. We look forward to seeing which businesses gain the greatest profits!
Have a wonderful week!
