Classroom Reports

Foundation & 1

Birth Notice - Foundation/One class are pleased to announce the safe arrival of 13 chicks after 21 days.  Special thanks to Dr Adele George and family for all the equipment: incubator and the electric hen/ broader.  Yes, there was much excitement on Wednesday and Thursday morning to discover the chickens had finally hatched. Eggatha, Curry and Eggburt were the first three chickens to hatch. We are now very keen to watch all of them grow and develop.

That's not the only thing that's growing and developing in our classroom. It's great to see so many children starting to read the 'fast way'.  Reading each night at home certainly helps contribute to this. Keep up the great progress you are making.

Mrs Tanya Chalmers, Teacher

Year 1 & 2

We are learning more about our area and our country. We are able to draw the outline of our country and name most of the states and territories.

This week we will be looking at some of the important places people visit in Australia. See below the water colour paintings we did of what our area looked like when our traditional Indigenous people lived here.

We are getting excited about our late stay next week and the Year 2 Excursion on Friday 19th November. If you did not receive a note concerning this please contact us via school diaries.

Have a great week!

Year 4 & 5

We are looking forward to our Doxa Camp. Thank you to Mr Forrest, for making this opportunity possible.

In class, students are learning about fractions and decimals and will start to apply our knowledge in practical ways. On Fridays with Mrs Postle, the students are learning about shapes 2D and 3D, nets and how to slide, flip and rotate shapes.

The College swimming program will start on Monday 29th November. Students will walk down to the pool and have a lesson for 40 minutes; this will be tailored at their point of need. More information will be provided shortly.

Mrs Carlie Turnbull, Teacher

Year 5 & 6

As the end of the year draws to an end the Grade 5/6 class are showing no signs of slowing in their learning! Keep up the amazing efforts!

Currently we are covering data sets and data types as well as graphing this data in Maths. Today we moved into triangles and identify the four main shapes. This will prepare us for Pythagoras theory!!

In Inquiry we are attempting to recreate the path of a Bill through Parliament. Currently the proposed change is that students can choose their own seats. This Bill may just be stopped by the Governor General yet…

In English we have started annotating some Classic Poems. ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling and the ‘Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carrol.  If you have a favourite poem which the class might like please feel free to let me know. For some, poetry is a very passionate subject.

VCAL & VCE

VCAL Excursion

On the morning of Friday 22nd October, Wedderburn College VCAL students were fortunate to be able to meet 97-year-old Ernie Fonte from Inglewood Health District Service Aged Care.

So as to ensure we followed COVID-protocols and were all COVID safe, the students met Ernie at the undercover area at Jacka Park with our masks on. The students really enjoyed spending time with Ernie and listening to his stories (a real character), it was a shame he had to compete with all the background noise of cars, trucks and ride on mowers!!!

Ernie made quite an impression on the VCAL students as they were still talking about the interview with him in class in the afternoon recalling all the different jobs he had and some of the funny stories he told.

The students learnt that Ernie left school to work full time from the age of 14 (equivalent to Year 8 today) and had many different jobs in Melbourne, Inglewood and Bendigo. Some of the jobs included a Locksmith, Milk Deliverer, Ice Maker, Taxi Driver, Chimney Sweep, Caterer, Fruiter and Truck Driver. Ernie’s story about how he became a Chimney Sweep and the negotiating skills he demonstrated to land a big contract cleaning chimneys in Bendigo was an important life lesson for the students. A big thank you to Cindy Gould (Youth Worker & Health Promotion at Inglewood and Districts Health Service) for organising Ernie’s visit. Cindy passed on her thanks to the VCAL students for being so patient and she said “I didn’t think Ernie could tell so many stories in an hour and a half!”. Cindy passed on that Ernie really enjoyed the students and the experience as he thought about things he hadn’t talked about for a long time, and he said it brought him back to life, he’s a 'character'

VCAL students had the opportunity to do an interview via WebEx with an ex-student Trent Jackson and learn about how he got started in his Traineeship as a PCA (Personal Care Assistant) at Inglewood & Districts Health Service. Trent shared with the students how he got the position via Facebook as well as information about the different aspects of his role, the training he was required to do and the interview questions he was asked. The students found this all very relevant and interesting especially as they are looking to go into full time employment soon. Thanks again to Cindy for arranging this for the VCAL students.
