Year 1- 2

Reading

In reading, the students in 1/2 continued to look at nouns and proper nouns. They have consolidated their knowledge on what the differences are between the two and enjoyed participating in quizzes to show their knowledge off. Along with nouns, the students also learnt how to track their thoughts whilst reading. They now know they need to stop and write down their ideas in order for them to keep up with their thoughts when reading.

Writing

During week 8 the students in grade 1/2 focused on writing poems. They looked at Cinquain, Haiku, sensory, and similes. They enjoyed working together to create a class poem each day, and then would work independently or in small groups to create their very own. They enjoyed having creative freedom with their writing and were able to create some fantastic pieces using the set rules for each poem.

In week 8, the students revised their knowledge of subtraction. They explored using different  subtraction strategies such as number line subtraction, vertical subtraction, and fact families. The students enjoyed consolidating their knowledge by playing games, completing activities, and creating fact family presents.

Inquiry

Week 9 saw the 1/2s start their two week Inquiry topic, where they are looking at celebrations around the world. The students spent some time thinking about and coming up with different celebrations that they know are celebrated or ones that they celebrate themselves. Throughout the week they then looked at seven different celebrations - Easter, Diwali, Chinese New Year, Holi, Ramadan, Day of the Dead, and Wesak - and discussed what they are and why people celebrate them. The students also then created a craft for each of the celebrations. They have had lots of fun this week and are super excited to complete their own research project on a chosen celebration next week.

Elf on the Shelf

Each day leading up to Christmas, Buddy the elf will visit the 1\2 learning community and the students will search our spaces to find him and see what he has gotten up to the night before. On Wednesday December 1st the students had their first Buddy the elf sighting. He wrote messages to each of the classes and then hid behind the star on the christmas tree. On Thursday we discovered he had gotten into our stickers! He had spent the night covering his entire body with them. Friday we found him playing twister. He had been watching how much fun we have when we play it during developmental play and obviously wanted to enjoy himself just as much! The students absolutely love discovering what Buddy got up to the night before and have so much fun in the mornings trying to find him in our community.

Visits from Mrs Schache and Miss Dodds

On Thursday the 2nd of December the 1\2’s were lucky enough to be visited by Miss Dodds, Mrs Schache and little baby Mia. They were thrilled to see them and had so many questions about life on maternity leave and with a baby! They loved seeing baby Mia and were excited to see if their predictions on what she would look like were correct. We miss them both so much and can’t wait for more visits next year!
