Prep

What a year it has been in Prep! As the end of year approaches, it is the perfect time to reflect on 2021 for our Prep students.

Term 1:

We spent Term 1 learning new sounds each day and adding these to our sound books to share at home. We started exploring different writing skills including holding a pencil correctly, using finger spaces, using initial sounds to help us spell words and rereading our writing. In Maths, we practised reading, writing and making numbers to 12 and learnt about 2D shapes.

We learnt about our school values and made lots of new friends. We also started learning about the Zones of Regulation including different strategies we can use to return to the green zone.

Term 2:

We continued learning the first 42 sounds as well as different concepts of print including the role of an author, illustrator, title and more. We started looking at various comprehension strategies such as predicting, summarising the beginning, middle and end of the story as well as asking questions before, during and after reading. We also started planning and writing recounts to record personal events. In Maths, we explored teen numbers as well as the days of the week, patterns and data displays.

Students loved participating in our weekly PMP sessions with Mr Pike and buddy sessions with the Year 5 and 6 students. They also enjoyed special events including the Teddy Bears Picnic, Mother’s Day open afternoon, National Simultaneous Storytime and a visit from author Adam Wallace.

Term 3:

Preps spent most of Term 3 participating in remote learning with daily Webex sessions, a special Prep website and lots of Loom videos from Mrs Ellingworth, Mrs Turner and Mrs McMahon. We completed many Reading, Writing, Maths and Integrated activities with our families and made lots of progress with our learning. We also enjoyed fun events such as Book Week and National Science Week.

During our time onsite, we managed to squeeze in events including 100 days of Prep, buddies and NAIDOC week celebrations.

Term 4:

In Term 4, we quickly settled back into school routines and put lots of effort into our learning. We enjoyed rekindling our friendships with our peers and playing with them in the playground. In Reading, Preps explored decoding skills in guided reading and continued learning about a range of comprehension strategies to help them understand texts in more depth and create stronger connections to the books they are reading. In Writing, we explored various text types including information reports and recounts. In Maths, we explored a range of concepts including addition, subtraction, sharing and money. Students enjoyed participating in our weekly PMP sessions and fun events such as House Competition.

Throughout the year, students have demonstrated our school values and should be incredibly proud of the progress they have made. They’ve had a very busy year so now it’s time to relax over the summer holidays before starting Year 1!
