Around the Primary Classes

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten students have had a busy couple of weeks enjoying a Teddy bears picnic at Bush Kinder, learning about lifecycles, picking, podding, shelling, cooking and eating broad beans from the Prep vegetable garden and at this time of the year the girls are enjoying completing increasingly complex puzzles.

Year Two

In History and Social Studies the Year Two students are learning about Hobart, Our City. They have written a persuasive, descriptive piece of text describing why they like Hobart and why people should visit Hobart, highlighting some of its historical features.

Year 3 - Friends in High (School) Places

One of the many wonderful things about having Kindy to Year 10 on one campus, is the high school students sometimes get to spend time with primary school students.

Ms Dennis’ Sport Science class invited the Year 3 students to participate in some fun activities. The high school girls planned, organised and supervised several fun activities as part of their final assessment. Jump rope, hula hoop, Red Light/Green Light, Mushroom Tag and Rob the Nest were just a few of the choices on offer. Some of the secondary students couldn’t resist the urge to join in. The Cahill Centre was the perfect place to burn off a bit of energy on a rainy day.

Mr Higginbotham’s STEM class set more cerebral challenges for the Year 3 students. Problem solving and Maths skills were tested by the games and activities the high school girls planned. Who knew Maths could be so much fun?

A big thank you to Ms Dennis, Mr Higginbotham and the secondary students for arranging these opportunities.

Year 5 Navy

In 5 Navy we have been learning about the Goldfields of Ballarat and one of the most dramatic events in Australian History; The Eureka Stockade.

We read Eureka! A powerful short story of the goldfields inspired by real people and events. We formed poetry circles with Year 5 White to examine a collection of Henry Lawson's poems and created a slide presentation, in our groups to show our understanding of the poems.

Through the reading of our class novel A Banner Bold, we learned about the life a young girl and her family from the 1800's called Rose Aarons. We discover how she becomes caught up in the battle between the miners and the soldiers at the Eureka Stockade. We also watched short film clips from The Gold Rush to gain an understanding of what Ballarat looked like and how people lived and worked in the gold fields...then the fun began!

We made models of the Ballarat goldfields complete with tools, dwellings, windlass-boles, and people to create a snapshot of a day in the life of a gold digger.

Year 5 White

To conclude their studies on the Aussie Goldrush and Eureka Stockade, Year 5 White designed and made board games.

The students had to include what they learnt over the course of the unit and to make sure these elements were included in their board games to add excitement, disappointment and intrigue to the games.
