Keeping your Children Safe Online

Parent Cyber Safety Sessions follow-up

A couple of weeks ago the school offered an online session for parents about how to keep your children safe when online - a major concern for all of us. Called 'Raising Kids in a Digital World', the session was hosted by Martin McGauran & Carley McGauran from 'Inform and Empower'. The webinar covered off a lot of really important areas such as gaming addiction, the risks involved in various social media platforms (TikTok, Snapchat, etc) and how you can make the right choices as a parent.

The session was very well received by the parents in attendance.

We know that with the summer holidays approaching, children might be spending more time on devices and online and it is really important that you understand the risks that are out there.

Use of Discord

Linked the the above session, we were recently made aware by a parent of a concerning incident involving their child and the Discord App.

The SKiPPS student has been receiving material from an unknown source, via the Discord app, that is inappropriate. The student thought they were recieving messages from a classmate but this appears not to be the case.

The parents have notified the police who are actively investigating the series of communications received via Discord. SKiPPS has blocked Discord at the network level that prevents students connected to our network, wirelessly or wired, from using Discord.

We urge you to monitor your children’s use of their devices and to speak with them about any communications they are receiving from Discord or any other app that enables communication with strangers.
