KOORIE
We were involved in the Sorry Day ceremony onMay 23 this year. As you are aware Sorry Day is the anniversary of the day the ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ was tabled in Federal Parliament. It is commemorated day all over Australia where groups gather to acknowledge the Stolen Generations. Some of our students danced, some were general participants and others took part in the ceremony. A big thanks to the Marrung Dancers, the Year Seven boys and student leader Ieasha Chapman. A special mention must also be given to Nhykira Rose Mansfield. At the last minute, she was drafted in to take part in the official reading of the text to the audience. Well done to all of you.
The Marrung dancers performed to the residents of the Rumbalara Elders Facility on Tuesday 25 June. Some of the Elders became quite emotional as the girls performed. Later, during a general mingling of the students and Elders, some of the Elders expressed their pride in the girls (and the year 7 boys who also went) that the youth were taking pride in their culture and were not forgetting the Elders. Thanks to Tanya Sayers for all the hard work she has put in with the students.
SPORT
After having to put off the school Athletics carnival because of inclement weather, it was held on Friday 17th May in beautiful conditions. Before announcing all the winners, a congratulations to the staff must be noted. Their hard work and dedication have made carnivals such as these so successful. All teachers went above and beyond their roles but special thanks must go to Mr. Armstrong who even though he was ill came in to help set up, Trent Herbert who ran the long jump with his arm in a sling after breaking his collar bone the evening before at football practice and to Ms. Elliot, Ms. Patty and Ms. Skehan who helped with the throwing events back at school. We also had some student helpers who were invaluable on the day (Rosie, Ellie and Jess of Year 11 and Max and Ethan of Year 8).To all the students who participated on the day of the event, and later at school for the throwing events – well done!
