Physical Education

Welcome back to Term Two! We hope everyone had a lovely Easter Holidays. This term we are focusing on developing skills used in specific sports, such as tennis, teeball, softball and gymnastics.

Years 4 to 6 students participated in the Intra-School Cross Country event, with 48 children selected to represent our school at the Syndal District Event on Friday 12th May. We wish those students all the best as they compete against the fastest cross-country runners in our district.

Year 6 students will have the opportunity to participate in Syndal District Winter Sport Round-Robins in Weeks 6 & 7, as well as a Soccer Round-Robin competition in Week 8.

Prep

In Term 2, Prep students will commence a tennis unit, focusing on the one-handed strike. This is the first time Prep learners have developed their striking skills at school, focusing on establishing correct technique with body position, eye-contact and backswing. Students will work on improving their ball control skills, as well as familiarise themselves with the use of a tennis racquet, transferring their skills into various learning tasks. Prep students will transition into discovering and exploring the key skills used in basketball. They will focus on dribbling, passing and shooting through a range of learning tasks designed to build confidence and skill level.

Key Vocabulary: Strike, control, eye-contact

Year 1 and 2

During Term Two, students will develop their striking skills through a tennis unit. Students will focus on continuing to develop their one-handed striking technique, with a focus on body position and backswing control. Participants will commence hitting the ball back and forth with a partner, requiring a high level of ball control and accuracy. Later this term, we are fortunate enough to have received funding to facilitate a gymnastics program run by an external provider. We will have two specialised gymnastics coaches visit Level 1 & 2 students for four sessions, developing a range of skills such as landing and travelling safely, moving smoothly in different ways and directions, jumping and performing simple movement sequences.

Key Vocabulary: One-handed, accuracy, side-on

Year 3 and 4

This term, students will focus on developing their knowledge of the tactics and strategies required to play tennis, as well as the refinement of their existing tennis-related skills. Footwork, court positioning and ball placement will be integral in students advancing their knowledge and skills when transferring these into tennis matches. Later in the term, students will transition into the sport of basketball. Similar to tennis, there will be a major focus on gameplay and strategy, in addition to the continuation of their basketball related skill development. Students will transfer their skills when playing a range of small-sided games, as well as participating in match simulations.

Key Vocabulary: Control, foot work, hand placement

Year 5 and 6

In Term Two, students will focus on playing games of tee-ball and softball, aiming to continue their growth and development in a range of contexts. With a focus on the two-handed strike, throwing, catching and fielding, the complexity will increase as students move from tee-ball to softball, where they are required to pitch and hit a moving ball. Students will have the opportunity to transfer their skills when they participate in games of tee-ball and softball. Students will then focus their attention to enhancing their knowledge of the game and skills of netball. Passing, catching, shooting and teamwork will shape the unit of work, with gameplay and strategy a key learning throughout. Students will be exposed to match simulation where they will transfer their learning into gameplay scenarios.

Key Vocabulary: Full body swing, loaded bases, home run

How can you support your child’s Physical Education learning at home?

  • Practice hand-eye coordination skills by completing catching and throwing practice either with a partner or against a wall!
  • Continue to take part in outdoor family activities such as scotting, walking, running and going to the park.
  • Research and view footage to learn more about how various sports are played.
