Wellbeing

Over the last few weeks, the students have been studying the brain. We have been focusing on the emotional (Amygdala) and thinking parts of the brain (Pre-frontal Cortex). When angry, stressed or upset the brain can be calmed down effectively using deep breathing strategies. These strategies re-engage the Pre-frontal Cortex increasing our ability to make good decisions and conserve energy. All students enjoyed making a pizza and candle to remind themselves to, “Smell the pizza and blow out the candle”.

The Prep and year 1’s, became imaginary car/motorbike drivers while we practiced stopping on the red traffic light and going on the green traffic light. Students were encouraged to use the ‘Traffic Light Strategy’ when they are faced with a problem.

Red- “Stopping and deep breathing”.

Orange- “Thinking about options”.

Green- “Making a green (good) choice.

The Prep and year 1 students were excited to make their own traffic light and I’m sure with parent support, they will be able to implement this strategy at home.

The Middle and Upper primary school students have been working on “self-talk”.  The year 2-4’s can identify positive and negative self-talk and the year 5-6’s students have worked in small groups to study a detailed scenario brainstorming positive and negative self-talk.
