Dear Parents and Carers

This week I want to share an interesting insight into Chat GPT and its pending impact on the education sector. If like me, you have been living under a rock and not heard of Chat GPT, it is by definition an AI chatbot that uses natural language processing to create humanlike conversational dialogue.

It has become a hot topic of discussion in the education industry and its popularity is growing rapidly. Chat GPT and AI are gaining a lot of attention due to their ease of use, learning capabilities and relevance to a wide range of subjects in school. As I was preparing for our upcoming staff development day, I happened upon an article where the authors actually asked Chat GPT why teachers should embrace Chat GPT?

Take a look at how it responded to the prompt below.

Prompt: Write a short blog on the benefits to teachers when using Chat GPT for lesson planning.

Lesson planning can be a time-consuming task for teachers, and finding creative ways to engage students and make the learning process more enjoyable can be a challenge. This is where Chat GPT, an AI-powered language model, can be of great assistance.

One of the main benefits of using Chat GPT for lesson planning is the ease and speed with which it can generate high-quality materials. By simply inputting a topic or prompt, Chat GPT can quickly generate a range of ideas and resources, including lesson plans, activities, and assessments. This saves teachers time and allows them to focus on other aspects of teaching, such as classroom management and student support.

Another benefit of Chat GPT is its ability to personalise lesson plans to meet the needs of individual students or groups. By analysing data on student performance and learning styles, Chat GPT can provide teachers with tailored recommendations for teaching strategies and activities that are more effective for specific students or groups. This can help teachers to better support struggling students and challenge advanced learners.

Chat GPT can also help teachers to stay up-to-date with the latest educational trends and research. By inputting relevant keywords and prompts, Chat GPT can generate articles, research papers, and other materials that are relevant to a specific topic or subject. These benefits can lead to improved student performance and a more enjoyable and fulfilling teaching experience for educators.

This response blew me away! I am a huge fan of embracing the latest technology but AI generally and Chat GPT specifically will be rapid game changers in the slow moving education sector. After reading the article, I casually asked Georgie, my 20 year old daughter if she had used Chat GPT for her recent uni assignments. She replied,

"Nah I don't pay, I just use the free AI on my phone. You have to be careful though, cause UNSW says it's plagiarism if you use AI responses without putting it into your own words."

My response, "You think?"
