What's happening at Cowra High
Year 11 Canberra Excursion
Students from Cowra High School were treated to a day of politics up close and personal when they visited Australian National University and Parliament House on Monday 10 September.
Fourteen Year 11 students from Cowra High took the trip to Canberra to be a part of the live audience for the ABC's Q & A program held at the Australian National University.
The episode was a High School Special, which gave students from across the country the opportunity to voice their opinions on the big issues.
Tuesday was spent touring the headquarters of the Labor Party and Parliament House. While visiting the Labor Party Headquarters, the students met 2009 Cowra High School captain, Erin Watt before moving onto Parliament House. There they met Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack. The students chatted with Minister McCormack about politics and what it was like to be a Deputy Prime Minister.
CHIPS excursion to see Morris Gleitzman
On Thursday 13 September, a group of students travelled by school bus to the Cowra Civic Centre to see Morris Gleitzman.
Morris Gleitzman is a well known author of books for young people. He spoke about his life and his writing. He also talked about the characters in his books being inspired by his “inside friends”. We enjoyed listening to him and we learnt how to improve our writing skills. He also talked about the importance of including a problem to be solved in our stories. He encouraged us to join in by asking the audience for ridiculous ways to solve the problem. This had a lot of us laughing.
A lot of Morris Gleitzman’s books are humorous with funny disasters. Some of his books which we have in the CHIPS room include: “Doubting Thomas”, about a boy with an embarrassing secret; “Bum Face” about Angus who wants to be bold, brave, wild and free. Another one is “Adults Only” which is a funny story about Jake who is supposed to be the only kid who lives on his island.
Morris Gleitzman encouraged us to use our local library. We enjoyed listening to him and we thank him for coming all this way.

World Peace Day Regional Youth Forum
On 18 September fourteen Year 10 students spent the day at the Cowra Civic Centre to participate in the World Peace Day Regional Youth Forum. The Cowra HS students were amongst several local schools, both primary and secondary, that attended.
Students were able to listen to presentations from officials and volunteers from the United Nations and Amnesty International, on the 70th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Our students also learnt about various issues related to human rights around the world.
It was an informative day with students having the opportunity to voice their opinions and participate in group sessions. In the afternoon they were able to listen to six students who read their short speech for the competition on “ My Path to Peace”.
