Food tech's day out

Sydney Tower welcomes our Year 10 students

Sydney Tower

Sydney Tower is a landmark we all know about but as a local of Sydney may never have experienced it ourselves. On Wednesday 7th March, 11 Year 10 Food Technology students got to play tourist and had a behind the scenes tour of the kitchens, listened to talks of the building's history and its current workings. We began our journey from Liverpool train station at 8am where we boarded our train to the city. Once we arrived we were split into two groups where we went on a tour of the fine dining restaurant - 360 Bar and Dining where we were treated to amazing views of the harbour bridge and stunning Sydney skyline whilst listening to an interesting history of the 43year old building, still deemed one of the safest buildings in Sydney. Even whilst swaying up to one meter sideways in high winds.

Next, we went to the basement, three floors below ground, where we went on a tour of the main kitchen, which cooks all the food for both restaurants high up in the clouds. It was rather hot, stuffy and quite small but ran smoothly and was very clean. The head chef spoke with us about work health and safety, hygiene, working together as a team and informed us that on their busiest days, they can cook meals for up to 1000 people over a lunch and dinner period.

We were all starting to get very hungry and tummies were rumbling on our 45 second trip back up to the clouds, where we were seated at the Sydney Tower Buffet for an all you can eat feast whilst enjoying a one hour revolution around the tower for a full 360 degree view of the Sydney city skyline.

We had lots of foods on offer including smoked salmon, fresh mussles, prawns, salt and pepper squid, lamb koftas, kangaroo with lentils, crocodile sausages, pasta, rice and lots of sweet wonderful desserts including ice-cream, fruit, cakes, tarts, tiramisu, churros and pavlova.

Once we were all full and could fit no more in, we bid thank you and farewell to our lovely hosts before heading off home via train. For some…this included a  McDonalds drink and chippies!!!!! Where do they fit it all? As your teacher I want to say thank you for your wonderful attitude and mature, respectful behaviour today, well done.
