Junior Sport

As I sit here writing this article, the rain has again started to thunder down and all hope for this weekend seems to be fading. I would like to thank all the boys, parents/carers and coaches for your patience so far with this summer season. It has been the most interrupted season I can remember, with many teams across the summer sports only having played one game in four and in some cases, are yet to complete a game. The forecast for the end of the week is looking better, so hopefully we will be able to get some play in.

A reminder to all parents and boys to look at the Junior School Fixtures and Cancellations page on Team App. This will have the most accurate information for game times, venues and cancellations. Please make sure you have signed up to the SPC Sport team, so that you can receive the notifications of training and game cancellations.

Last Tuesday, the Junior School Swimming Squad made the trip out to Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC) to compete in the annual IPSHA Swimming Carnival. The day was very busy with hundreds of races swum and over 50 schools competing. Our boys swam very well with some new Personal Bests (PB’s) set and ribbons won. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in the IPSHA selections with none of our boys moving through to the next carnival. Congratulations to all our swimmers on a very dynamic, yet short swimming season. You represented the College with grace and dignity, and you should all be very proud of your efforts.

Tuesday 15 March will see the Junior School compete in the Annual Cross Country Carnival. Boys will come to school in their PE uniform with Colour House Shirt and tracksuit if cooler weather should persist. The carnival is held during periods one and two on and around the College grounds. Parents/carers are warmly welcome to cheers on the boys, however we will ask for parents/carers and boys to remain separated during the event.

The carnival is run in three age groups: 10s, 11s and 12s, with the 10s covering a 2km distance and 11s and 12s covering a 3km distance. This is a compulsory event for all boys in the Junior School and all boys are expected to participate. Should your son not be able to take part on the day, a medical certificate will be required. Boys that finish in the top five of their age group will be selected in the Junior School Cross Country Team and will compete in the IPSHA Carnival on Saturday 26 March at the Kings School.

The Cross Country Carnival also serves as the Junior School’s major Lenten fund raising activity. All boys in the Junior School will be asked to seek sponsorship for their involvement in the carnival, raising money for those less fortunate. This year, our Lenten partner is the Edmund Rice Centre for Justice. They advocate for various issues, most notably recognition for the original Australians (First Nations peoples), support and advocacy for the most recently arrived Australians (refugees and peoples seeking asylum) and care and protection of the earth.

With the Summer season having only two weekends remaining, many boys are beginning preparations for the upcoming Winter season. Boys and families will be notified of Winter Sports Trials a little closer to the trial date. Boys wishing to trial for football will need shin pads for the trials and those involved in rugby and AFL trials will need a mouthguard, head gear is optional.
