1/2 K

Happy St Patrick's Day, from the wonderful 1/2K.

Literacy

In reading and writing we have been focusing on adjectives and the different words we can use to describe a character. The children came up with an amazing list of words, thinking about the appearance, personality and size of a character in the stories we read. Then the children used the list of adjectives to create a description of themselves. Check out their amazing adjectives work.

Inquiry

In science the children have further explored materials with a focus on bending and twisting materials in order to change them. This is in preparation for becoming an innovator in the up coming weeks. This children twisted string together this week and learnt to plait. The children then discussed how they had changed three strings of wool into something new. Some children decided to use their new string for a keyring on their bag, others friendship bracelets and some a bookmark for their readers.

We also looked at how string can be twisted to assist us in our everyday lives, such as our shoelaces that keep our shoes on our feet. The children practice tying their own shoelaces, paying close attention to each step.

Here they are all trying very hard to tie their own shoe laces.

If you would like to practise this skill with your child at home here is the link to how to tie your shoelaces for children by ascent footwear Australia.

St Patrick's Day

The children have really enjoyed learning about St Patrick this week and his amazing life story. We have learnt that Patrick was born in Wales and was captured by pirates at ages 16. Then he was sold into slavery as a farm hand to an Irish farmer. Ask your child about the rest of St Patrick's life to find out how he survived.

We have also learnt about the symbols of St Patrick's Day and how people around the world celebrate. The children learnt about the colour green, the shamrock, the leprechaun and that many countries have large parades through the main city streets.

Here are the children making their St Patrick's Day hats to celebrate.
