From The Year 12 Student Leadership Team

Over the past few weeks, the Year 12 Student Leadership Team worked on and participated in numerous activities to strengthen the Brigidine Spirit within the community in an event-filled start to the term.

2022 Swimming Carnival

This year, due to COVID restrictions, our annual swimming carnival looked a bit different with only competitors attending at Botany Aquatic Centre. Well done and congratulations to all those who competed!

In lieu of this, the Student Leadership Team hosted a variety of fun activities including skipping and competing in an intense student vs teacher volleyball game at lunch in Cullen Hall. Those who participated were awarded either Zooper Doopers or ice blocks.

We have to admit that the teachers’ performance was quite impressive and they definitely had the lead the entire game. PE gear was put on, high heels came off and competition was high -  we’ve never seen the teachers this much in their element.

Student’s Clean Up Australia Day

Friday, March 4 was Student’s Clean Up Australia Day. This day empowers all people, but especially students to take action against climate change and clean up the environment.

Throughout the week, Molly Martin (Sustainability Captain) and Ruby Thomasyu (SRC Captain) worked hard to remind the students to actively clean and preserve our school and the local community. They stressed the importance of disposing of waste appropriately and encouraged students to ensure that they’re doing their part as active citizens, rather than passive bystanders.

On Friday, led by Molly and Ruby (with the help of Ms Borg) a select group of eco-warriors braved the rain, setting out on foot to clean our College and public community spaces. Whilst cleaning, the volunteers engaged in conversation about what the most common forms of rubbish appeared to be in our community and even strategised sustainable solutions. There was plenty of laughter too.

Big shoutout to Molly and Ruby who organised this!

Shrove Tuesday

Tuesday, March 1 was Shrove Tuesday. To kickstart the beginning of Project Compassion, the student leaders sold pancakes at recess. This was a great success and we sold out in the first 5 minutes! A fantastic outcome, especially with the money raised undoubtedly helping those who are most vulnerable.

Thank you to Ms Wood, Ms Atlamaz and to all those involved for helping us organise this event!

Keep updated on the numerous Spirit Week activities that will occur in Week 7 which will include easter egg hunts, lolly jar and song guessing. Let the best house win!

Ash Wednesday

To mark the beginning of this year’s Lenten season, the Leadership Team helped conduct an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. This year, Pope Francis called for the Universal Church to dedicate its liturgies to the people suffering in Ukraine.

During the liturgy, we were challenged to love all those we encounter and be ambassadors of peace. We were reminded that ‘we can’t force peace on the world but we can become a force of peace in the world because sometimes all it takes is a single lit candle in the darkness to start a movement.’

The liturgy served as a reminder for the community to keep all persons suffering throughout the world at the forefront of our minds and to consider our intentions for the period of Lent.

Leadership Commissioning Mass

On Tuesday, March 1, the 2022 Student Leadership Team was officially commissioned at an evening mass held at the OLSH parish in Randwick. It was heartwarming to see the parents having the opportunity to pin the badges on their daughters.

Thank you to all the teachers, Brigidine Sisters and families who attended this mass to support us. We cannot wait to see what 2022 will bring for us as a team.

International Women’s Day & Feast of St Brigid

Tuesday, March 8 was International Women’s Day. Brigidine decided to celebrate this day in conjunction with the feast of our patron saint, St Brigid, a central figure of female strength (and gentleness) at our school. A morning mass was held, followed by a sausage sizzle lunch and dance party in Synan Hall.

It was our first whole school event since COVID restrictions eased and the Brigidine Spirit was high. It was so exciting to sport our purple, green and white ribbons. They were just a little pop of colour to raise visibility and remind us that whilst we are unique we are also in unity.
