Design and Technologies

Picture this. A Year 7 Textiles class, sitting in Room 67 for the first time and the teacher asks, “Please put on your ‘designer’ hats and think about what object in this room has NOT been ‘designed’, I challenge you to find something made by man but not designed.” This opening statement always pulls in the competitive student, and I love witnessing them rise to the challenge!

Quickly the students learn that even the ceiling tiles, light covers, cupboards and door handles were designed for a purpose. Now, I firmly believe that if we had more responsible ‘designers’ in this world that used their design skills to improve the standards of society then our cupboards would be more fun to look at and it would be easier to access  the space behind the doors.

There upon, our call-to-action as teachers of Design and Technologies is to deliver - 'how to develop authentic design thinking skills'. Design thinking skills opens up the students' minds and allows them to explore, research, test, trial, ask questions, reflect, collect feedback, make mistakes, try again and produce a product worthy of use, sustainable and easy on the palette and eye. That’s why I love my job! Watching this process is always a marvel.

In 2022 Kilbreda Design and Technology students will use their design thinking skills to plan and create many awesome products. Our junior Food Technology students have recently begun their journey by sharpening up their knife skills and making colourful and tasty fruit kebabs.
