Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 1/Week 9-10

2021

Writing

This week students have been working on their 'sizzling starts' as they edit and revise their work by themselves and with a peer. Students have then been publishing their stories.

Reading

Last week in reading, students continued their focus on summarising but now with non-fiction textS. They used the read, cover, remember and retell strategy to write dot points while researching for their inquiry project. This week students had a focus on finding the main idea in their non-fiction 'GOOD FIT' books. Teachers have continued to confer with students to gain a deeper understanding of the students as readers.

Maths

This week students continued to work on place value and decimals and some created games to demonstrate their understanding. Students also completed a short formal assessment to gauge what they have learnt throughout the term.

Inquiry

This week we finished our Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry.  On Monday we visited the Shrine of Remembrance and students learned more about Australia's role in global conflicts and peacekeeping. They also learned what the Shrine of Remembrance represents for Victorians and why it was created. In the classroom, students shared their unit of inquiry projects that they have been working on over the past few weeks and received feedback on their work.
