Year 3 News

We are very proud of the work our Year 3 students have been doing in the classroom for the last two weeks. Here is a snap shot of what has been happening from our very clever communicators!

While we are coming to an end of our Unit of Inquiry: ‘People Express themselves differently according to environment and audience’, students have been drawing from the skills they have learnt in this unit to address the following lines of inquiry –

  • Communication Skills
  • Understanding audience and environment
  • Reflecting on the impact my communication has on others

With this in mind, students were given an opportunity to look around their own school community and recorded what they saw as problems and needs within the school.

Students were then set the task to narrow down their ‘problems’, and within small groups create possible solutions.

The students then needed to decide upon who their best audience would be to ‘inform’ about the problem and needed to select the best form of ‘communication’ to reach this audience.

There was a broad range of issues highlighted by students – dog poo on the oval, buddy bench update, bike shed crowding and school littering to name a few.

Additionally, there were many modes of communication chosen (videos, posters, PowerPoints, stories etc.) to persuade their audience that action was needed.

We are very proud of how the students worked together to create actions for change. Please see some examples of the students’ work.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

First, we walked around the school to look at what we thought we needed to change about the school. After that, we made a list, we chose what we wanted to make a presentation about. We had about a few days to make the presentation. Now it is time to do the presentation.

To make the presentation we had to do a Crazy 8’s. Crazy 8’s is a sheet of paper and we needed to write the problem and  8 things to fix it. Some people did presentations, some people did a video or a book. We were allowed to do anything to show how to fix something.

Our problem was the Buddy Bench is a little broken. The way we will fix this is that we can fundraise for money to get stickers and paint to fix it up.

From Ellen

First we went on a hunt to find the problems that we will use on our crazy 8 then we got dojo to make the groups and I was with Emily Lenny Cooper and Me. Then we chose the argument and of course It was that the school car park was dangerous our solution was we could maybe put a net on it then we did our 3 communications they were Poster, Power point and letter to Mrs Duffy

I really enjoyed that activity because we got to choose what we wanted to do on the 3 ways of communication and the crazy 8 for the topic
