Year Seven Camp

I stood on the platform about to go down the waterslide, letting everybody go down before me. As Audrey slid down, I looked around and saw there was no one left to go. A horrible feeling gripped me as I rethought what I was about to do. It was now or never. I stepped over the barrier gripping the edge tightly with my numb fingers. I looked down. It was a very long way. I grabbed my thongs and chucked them down. All my friends were shouting up at me from the bottom saying things like: ‘come on Sarah!’ and ‘you can do it!’ a sudden daring feeling entered my head. I let go. I whizzed down, gathering speed. The water was starting to spray in my face and as I tried to take a breath, I found that I couldn’t. I tried to suck in air but I felt like I was suffocating. I opened my eyes and I really wished I hadn’t. I was panicking more and more as I tried to take in air and the bottom of the slide loomed nearer. For a split second, I felt like I was going to die, I knew it. Then I finally hit the surface of the water at the end and the feeling intensified. I was thrown about and finally I slowed to a stop. I gulped in a lungful of air and a feeling of relief washed over me. My heart was pumping fast and I was shivering all over. Adrenaline was running through me as I jumped up and rushed up the stairs, ready to go again.

The waterslide.

The event all your brothers and sisters tell you about.

The event everybody is excited for, (well maybe not first thing in the morning).

The walk was exciting. The teachers were all telling us about how much fun the waterslide was. Of course, they forgot to tell us that it was freezing cold, and it would feel like you weren’t going to be able to breathe again when you got halfway down.

Once we arrived everybody was looking at the slide which had ice frozen onto it

“Right, everyone start walking up the steps!” All 14 of us were just standing there looking up the intimidating steps wondering how we were going to walk up them let alone 102 times if we wanted to beat the record.

We started walking up looking back, jealous of the people who made the smart decision to not go on the waterslide. Finally, we were up and at this point I was so tempted to go straight back down, no hesitation. But according to the year 10 leaders we weren’t allowed.

Bella and Lulu went down first. I heard the scream at the end and I wasn’t very confident but I still went down next. The start was a bit like a normal waterslide the only problem was it was cold. I just kept thinking of the nice warm shower I would be having when I got back to my cabin but within about one second that thought changed. It was more a thought of ‘will I even be alive by the end of this?’ and then all my thoughts went away because I was struggling to breathe.

I got to the end and it took me a moment to realise what had just happened.

My favourite part was definitely the hot shower I had at the end but overall, it was a fun experience.

Stepping out of the bus like a chick hatching from an egg. I had to teach myself to walk again, in those two minutes we were waiting for Warren (the Camp Manager) to arrive. All the other kids ate their lunch when we got to camp. But I had already finished mine on the bus (Sorry Mr Sharpley).

Then all of us sat down in a big group and listened to what the teachers said about rules about how to behave in the cabin. But I can’t remember what they said. All the words sounded the same in the hot, radiant sun. That was until they started announcing cabin groups; like that moment in Harry Potter, when Harry put on the Sorting Hat. Just endless nervous anticipation. But when I heard who was in my cabin, my face lit up at the prospect of being able to sleep, as last camp, I didn’t sleep well, and it took me weeks to recover.

Bollywood dance competition.

We walked into the stage area and sat down in our House groups and waited.

Then the year 10 leaders started dancing to a song and ran up onto the stage and finished the dance.

We all clapped in amusement.

Then one of the teachers came up onto the stage and gave us a challenge.

It was to create a Bollywood dance with most of the dance moves she showed us.

I’m pretty sure some of them were called weird names like, I punch myself or something weird like that.

We went off into House groups. Riley got the stage to practice on.

We decided to have some solo acts. One of my friends was one of the three people who did a solo and she did a spider walk, which is a bridge walk, but it looked like a spider to me!

Then two boys in our class did the worm and it was so much fun.

We watched the others do there’s and one of them was good at the start, but it went downhill from there.

We waited to find out who would win:

“The winner of the 2021 House Bollywood Dance Competition is….. Riley House!”

One of my friends went mad over this win.

Once we got back to the cabin it took a while to get to sleep because of all the excitement but eventually we did.

6:30am- “Wake up Boys! Time to get up!”

That was my cabin mates telling us all to get up. It was way too early for breakfast so all we ever did was muck around while we waited for Breakfast. As we all were running around, I checked the cabin notice board and I suddenly remembered that we have the ferocious Waterslide activity. I was nervous and paranoid and started overthinking everything that could go wrong!

7:30am-“Line up, line up!”

That was Mr James urging everyone to get in a massive line for Breakfast that went all the way outside!  Just as expected, it was scrumptious just like yesterday!

8:30am- “Group 3, Group 3!”

That was my group leader Pat. He was telling everyone to go and get their stuff ready for the water slide. I was nervous already. But as we approached the giant slide, we all were eager to go down. After we were taught how to do it safely, I did not want to do it. But I mustered all my courage and sat down in the slide, crossed my arms and slid down.  And then it hit me. An enormous wave of water splashed on my face.  I see why they call it the “Wedginator”.
