Mrs Collette Derrick

Life before Girton.

I attended primary and early secondary school in England and this included some time at a boarding school in Kent. In Australia I attended secondary schools in Gippsland, Melbourne and Bendigo. I completed a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) at Bendigo Teachers College and a Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies at La Trobe University Bendigo. Before commencing at Girton in 2004, I taught at a number of schools in Melbourne and Gippsland.

What I Love about Teaching

I love that teaching keeps your brain active, allowing you to continue on your journey as a lifelong learner. As a teacher you get to continually interact with new faces and personalities. I love watching the delight on a student’s face when they grasp a new concept.

What do you like best about the subject/s you teach?

Mathematics is a fundamental tool for understanding the world and plays an important role in our everyday lives. The great thing about teaching Numeracy is that it can be explored in many practical, interesting and fun ways. It is a delight to see students who are afraid of Mathematics transform into students who have confidence in their ability.

My favourite classroom activity

One of my favourite classroom activities is a game called Lizard Land. This game is aimed at grade two and three students. This game teaches many concepts in relation to place value. Students really enjoy this game and learn so much, whilst having fun.

What difference can good teaching make?

Good teaching can certainly make a difference. It encourages students to question and understand concepts. A good teacher can inspire a love of the subject and learning. Good teaching encourages students to reach their potential.

Other Hats

Outside of the classroom I am involved in the co-curriculum assisting Girton Rowers.

In my spare time I like to go to the gym and walk. I enjoy reading and watching movies and spending time with family and friends.
