Foundation

It has been another week of fantastic learning in Foundation. This week concludes the end of Term 3. Although many weeks of learning have occurred online this term, we are very proud of the students in FAM and FLW, who have all been amazing communicators, collaborators, researchers, thinkers, e-learners and self-managers.

As inquirers and researchers, we viewed a video about what school was like for Mrs Wenckowski and a “live” interview session was held in our joint Foundation Google classroom to find out what school was like for Miss Marsico. We looked at photos and listened carefully. The questions posed were from all of the wonderings that we had. As thinkers, we sorted out our thinking by identifying the similarities and differences that we noticed between Mrs Wenckowski’s experience of school and Miss Marsico’s experience of school.

As communicators, some of us shared items from the past that our parents and grandparents once used. We listened to the stories behind a variety of utensils, toys, games and precious jewellery items. This week, FAM will also have time and opportunity to share special items from the past with each other and listen to the stories behind the special items.

As a fun way to end the term, Mrs Watson organised an online PJ party for us to celebrate the end of term. After whole school prayer on Facebook Live, we all danced to the sounds of 80’s music lead by a member of the Footsteps Dance Company. The link was available for our families to also use on the weekend and we hope that everyone took up the opportunity to dance and have some fun together.

Thank you to everyone for your support during the challenges of Remote Learning this term.

Wishing everyone a restful holiday break and some downtime away from screens, alongside plenty of opportunities to enjoy hopefully what will be sunny Spring days.

Year 1/2

Well, we're on the downhill run for Term 3!  Our students remain engaged and though, a bit tired, are still smiling and wearing their yellow hats!  We have seen so much growth in their learning and, also in their skills and capabilities, such as self managers, communicators, researchers and thinkers. Thanks again for supporting the children and for remaining upbeat and positive!

We trust that you all enjoyed the Pyjama Dance Party surprise that Mrs Watson organised. What a great way to finish Term 3.  At our 9:30 on Friday, our students danced away to some bobby tunes and experienced various dance styles including hip hop, funk and modern pop. The partying continued onto the weekend!

As we wind down on our Shared Inquiry ‘How do stories help us to understand the past?’ the students have explored stories and other ranges such as art, music, dance, poetry to gain insights into the lives of people from the past. The students exercised their creative expression and brought the stories to life in different ways.

Mini passion projects continue to be a work in progress with students researching things that are of interest to them. This week they will continue to explore and create their personal project. Next term, the students, as researchers and communicators, will share their projects with each other. Their learning will be showcased through the Google Classroom, or, fingers crossed back in our learning spaces.

Even though the footy won’t be in its spiritual home, have fun with it everyone!

Happy holidays!

Kindest regards

Stefanie Carriera, Belinda Filippone and Maria Delaney

Year 3/4

It is hard to believe that we are in week 10 of Term 3. We celebrated “R U Ok? Day 2021” last Thursday and on Friday we had a fun PJ party. The 3/4 students have worked very hard this term and have achieved a great deal. Please see below for some photos of us and our amazing work!

In Mathematics, the Year 3/4 students are continuing to investigate Location by reading and creating maps and giving directions using both grid references and compass points.

As a final conclusion about the findings of our inquiry-based learning on How have people of diverse backgrounds and cultures contributed to our community?, we are reflecting this week upon the significant people or case studies we have researched. From this, we will  begin to think about the ways in which we too can make lasting contributions to our families and to our school.

As writers, we have enjoyed researching and composing our own Animal Information reports, where we successfully used a rubric to cross-check our work, ensuring that our information report writing is of high quality. This week, we will use  author Adrian Beck’s writing technique, the 3 M’s, to inspire lots of creative ideas for our writing. We will then use these ideas to compose our own interesting and entertaining narratives.  We can’t wait to share our stories with everyone next term!

Finally, a huge congratulations to all of our wonderful Year 3 and 4 students. They have done such an outstanding job during remote learning this term and we are extremely proud of all their hard work and effort.

The upcoming school break is almost here! This is a time for our 3/4  students to recharge and enjoy a much slower pace in doing things that make them happy.

Thank-you to all our parents and families for your amazing support throughout this term. Make the most of the sunshine and screen-free schedules. Keep safe and well and we will look forward to making the most of Term 4 - however that looks!

Religion

The students learnt about forgiveness and reconciliation through Rembrandt's famous painting of the Return of the Prodigal Son.  They looked at the qualities of what makes an effective leader and identified some of these qualities in influential leaders like Martin Luther King Jr and Mother Teresa. The students have learnt  about the Catholic Social Teaching of Solidarity through Caritas. They have been  preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.  The Grade 6’s meet online with Michele L, a presenter from the Presentation Sisters order.   Students explored the story of Pentecost and the Holy spirit.  They  identified the gifts of the Holy spirit and have started to reflect on how these gifts can become part of their everyday lives.  The students have researched a saint and presented their information in an interesting way.

Literacy

The students wrote their reflections about camp. They learnt how to make connections to self, others texts and the world in response to a range of indigneous texts. They read a range of texts about different migrants, and how they came to Australia. The students learnt about the life of Rosina and Marino Casamento (Mrs Casamento’s husband's grandparents). We have begun reading/listening to a whole class text called “The 39 Clues”. Students wrote letters to their grandparents. They explored a range of Book Week books and wrote different poems such as Haiku, Ekphrastic and Limericks. The students wrote a narrative about “The Suitcase” and entered the Kids News writing competition.

Mathematics

The students focused on Division and Data Representation. They created graphs representing several sets of data and learnt how to interpret various graphs. The students  worked on solving challenging division problems and identifying efficient strategies to solve them. They learnt volume and capacity. They have done capacity scavenger hunts around the house where students used their skills to convert a number of capacity equations from millilitres to litres, to kilolitres and megalitres and back again.  The students are learning about Time, Time elapsed and Timetables.

Inquiry

The students explored NAIDOC week.  They learnt about  how Indigenous Australians connect to Country and how they protect the land we live on today. Students discussed their immigration stories of their parents, grandparents and family members and their experiences when migrating to Australia. They researched an Indigenous Australian or immigrant who has made a difference to life in Australia.  Students had the opportunity to present their special person to the whole class on google meets.

STEM

The students have had the challenge of creating a prosthetic arm for disadvantaged people. They have been introduced to Mr MacGregor’s nephew who faces challenges with a prosthetic hand.  The students spent many weeks brainstorming, developing, testing and improving their design.  They have begun their pitch of explaining the advantages of their model.  Many of our students have attended an excursion to ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) where they learnt how to create and use animation to make figures appear as moving images. (See the youtube clips on Learning & Teaching Page - STEM)

The 5/6 teachers are very proud of all the amazing learning our 5/6 students have done during the term.

Stay safe and have a well desired break!
