PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS

Last week’s Physical Education lessons involved students from Years F - 2 playing the game ‘Floor Is Lava’ and the students from Years 3 - 6 playing the game, ‘Stinky Socks’.

Once again, the students were able to play these games by themselves or with another person. They watched videos showing them how to set up the games and then how to play the games. Thank you to all the students who sent in photos and videos of the obvious fun they had playing these games.

Interschool Sport News

School Sport Victoria (SSV)

As you can appreciate, there continues to be uncertainty of lockdowns, uncertainty around the resumption of interschool sport and the challenges SSV  faces in conducting large participation events. SSV needs to continue to adhere to the latest public health advice as well as broader Department of Education and Training (DET) communications to the sector, including the DET Schools Operations Guide. In addition, resumption of any interschool sport is dependent on advice from the Department of Health that it is considered safe to do so. Therefore, SSV has considered what could be delivered should interschool sport be permitted to resume in Term 4 and any requirements as directed by the DET Schools Operations Guide and community sport guidance.

1. State Championships

Cancelled School Sport Victoria State Championships:

The following State Championships have been cancelled for 2021, due to the limitations in completing the progression through to a State Championship during Term 4:

  • Primary State Track and Field Championships
  • Primary Basketball, Cricket, Softball, Volleyball
  • Premier League Australian Football

Postponed School Sport Victoria Primary Teams Tennis, Junior Golf and Primary Golf:

These Championships are delivered by the respective State Sporting Organisations and are currently postponed. SSV is in discussions to as ascertain the possibility of re-scheduling these events

The communication of these cancelled State Championships is available on the SSV website (School Sport Victoria – News Coronavirus and school sport (ssv.vic.edu.au))

2. District/Division Competitions

Depending on advice that interschool sport can resume, SSV encourages schools to conduct interschool sport at Primary District levels to maximise school and student participation in school sport. Any interschool sport would need to be conducted in line with advice from DET Schools Operations Guide and community sport guidance.

Coordinators of Primary Districts will need to meet with their member schools to ascertain what sports could go ahead. At this stage, the SSV Coburg District Athletics Championships has been rescheduled for the following date:

Tuesday 12 October (Back up Thursday 14 October)

Although this date has been rescheduled, it is highly unlikely that this event will go ahead due to the probability that restrictions will not allow it.

3. Region Competitions

Once the resumption of interschool sport has been announced, SSV will be in discussion with all Region Coordinators to determine which Region Competitions could go ahead.

4. Other school and student participation opportunities

SSV is encouraging school and student participation in school sport through other initiatives including:

  • SSV Virtual Cross Country (School Sport Victoria Announcement (ssv.vic.edu.au)) which will remain open until 1 October. Students can take part in any way they would like - they can run or walk. Every metre run by a student will earn virtual points for their school.
  • SSV Virtual Track and Field will open for schools and students to get involved in a range of track and field disciplines during Term 4.

I know the postponements and cancellations are extremely disappointing for everyone concerned, especially our students. Please stay tuned for further updates.

WE GOING TO STEM MAD!!!

We have good news! In Term 2 and 3 students from Years 5/6 and 3/4 have been designing and constructing using LEGO Spike and WeDo2.0 to create a prosthetic hand for Mark MacGregor's nephew, Zac. The following students have been selected for their great design to make a difference to Zac's life. We are currently getting feedback from Zac too on how they could improve their design.

The following students should be congratulated...

> Lachlan R & Sanjay- S.A.M. The Prosthetic Hand (5/6VC)

> Siearra p & Luca S- The Handontor (5/6CF)

> Isaac P & Harry P- The Armstrong (5/6OS)

> Zacgrabber- Catherine & Hunter (3/4GT)

Then there are the following students who during 'Remote Learning' designed and created an invention to make others Feel Positive and how to Stay Positive. They did an amazing job and I had to enter their idea to STEM Mad! Guess What? They were selected as finalists for their great idea!!!

I would like to congratulate the following students...

> Ava B- Positive Thoughts Box (FAM)

> Francesco & Emily- The Positive Vending Machine (3/4)

> Ava Brazel- The Positive Box (5/6OS)

Congratulations to the above students’ whose ideas and prototypes have been chosen for the finals by the Curators/Judges from STEM MAD. This is a great achievement by each one of them considering we are in lockdown and doing Remote Learning. Well done and they should be proud of themselves!

This year, STEM MAD LIVE is going NATIONWIDE. This means Catholic Schools from all around Australia have entered their ideas to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. To make it this far is AMAZING! Students will now have to produce a 3 minute video showcasing their prototype and how it works? How does it make a difference in someone’s life and what was their design process to get their prototype to work?

The Finalists will be announced on the Thursday 14th of October 2021 where the students will participate in the STEM MAD ShowcaseLive! We wish our students all the best and congratulations on getting this far.

LOTE - Rosa Fokianos

Salve! (Hello). Siamo quasi arrivati alla fine del terzo trimestre! (We've nearly made it to the end of Term 3!) 😃

This week, I will be giving our St Fidelis school community a snapshot of what the Grade 5/6 children have been learning about in italiano this term.

Grade 5/6 started off Term 3 by revising, both orally and written, their feelings and giving reasons for their feelings, using various phrases. For example: “Salve, come stai? Perchè?” (Hello, how are you feeling? Why?) “Salve, sto molto bene grazie, perché sono contenta.” (Hello, I’m feeling very well thank you because I am happy - f ).They also revised gender endings and noun adjective agreement, as well as participating in an Italian Kahoot quiz.

Once Remote Learning started, the children revised family members and described their own family including their names and their ages, For example: “Mia madre si chiama Anna. Lei ha quarantadue anni”(My mother’s name is Anna. She is 42 years old). They demonstrated their learning through Google slide presentations.

Next, the children began a cultural unit based on “Da dove viene la tua famiglia?” (Where does your family come from?) This migration unit tied in nicely with their regular class Inquiry topic related to Cultural Identity. Here the children discussed their cultural heritage and nationalities, which then led to interviewing an older family member or neighbour, asking various questions in italiano about their migration experience. The children are currently completing this task and will hopefully be able to present their work to the rest of their grade at the beginning of next term...speriamo! (hopefully!) The work that I have received so far, has shown a deeper understanding of their own families cultural identity and hopefully has given them further insight into their family history. Bravi ragazzi!

I have included in today’s article a whole school photo snapshot of some of the work that I received during this term’s lockdown from. Ben fatto a tutti! (Well done everyone!) I would like to say grazie (thank you) to everyone, bambini e genitori (children and parents), that have participated/assisted in my Italian online learning sessions this term. You have shown to be great e-learners, good communicators, self managers and most importantly have shown resilience and determination. Ottimo lavoro! Keep practising the italiano that you have learnt during this term!
