DAV Schools Competition Finalists

The DAV Schools Competition – the main debating competition for our senior debaters – wrapped up at the start of Term 4. A total of eight teams made it to the finals, with all teams making it to the final 16 teams (out of over 1,350 who began the competition) in the Octo-Finals, and two of our teams making it all the way to the Quarter Finals (the final eight teams in their grade).

This is an outstanding effort and a fantastic result for our debaters, placing them amongst the very best teams in the state. Well done to everyone:

DAV Schools Competition Quarter-Finalists:

  • Year 12: Patrick M, Martin G, Chelsey D, Kallista A, Kavithi
  • Year 10: Harshitaa N, Rishika D, Anushka S, Eleni M, Daphne G

DAV Schools Competition Octo-Finalists:

  • B Grade: Oscar L, Emily S, Haresh L, Ella E, Anjali S
  • C Grade: Pranav C, Michael X, Lithasha P, Danesh S, Rohan D
  • D Grade: Nihar P, Andy D, Nanda J, Alan L

Their final debates were very close and well-argued, with our Year 10 Quarter-Finalists losing by only a single point, and our Year 12s going to a split decision (meaning that the panel of adjudicators disagreed on the result, forcing them to go instead with a majority decision).

Many thanks to the staff who have helped these debaters throughout the year:

Robin Clarke, Adam Drennan, Marta Lopez, Shan Christensen (and Ryan Shave, for being our resident finance guru who is always willing to step in to run a last-minute crash course on economics).

DAV Swannie Award Winner

Well done to Michael X, who was named as the winner of the Year 10 Swannie Award for the Glen Waverley Region by the Debaters Association of Victoria!

The Swannie Awards are awarded to the speaker in each region and grade of the Schools Competition who has the highest average speaker score after completing at least three debates during the year. It is a huge honour to be named as the best overall speaker in a grade, and we congratulate Michael on this achievement.

DAV Junior British Parliamentary Debating Finalists

Over the past several weeks, the Junior British Parliamentary debating tournaments have been held for students in Years 7 and 8. The enthusiasm from our debaters was palpable, with eight teams joining the competition.

Following the initial rounds of competition, three Huntingtower teams finished amongst the top eight teams in the competition, which has qualified them for places in the Semi-Finals, and a shot at the Grand Final, which will all take place in one final tournament on Sunday 7 November.

Well done to all the competitors on some truly outstanding debating, and congratulations to our finalist teams:

  • Jade H, Prisha R and Olivia W (Year 8)
  • Sophie L and Keira L (Year 8)
  • Elle D, Alexis F and Jehan M (Year 7)

Congratulations as well to Olivia W and Pranav M, where were the top speakers in their respective tournaments!
