NAPLAN

Our 2021 NAPLAN results have arrived and we are so proud of all our Year 3 and 5 learners. The results of the 2021 Year 3 and 5 students are cause for celebration and a huge pat on the back to teachers and parents who have worked together more than ever before, to support and grow learning through two years of disrupted schooling.

NAPLAN is one test that governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents use to determine whether or not young Australians have the critical literacy and numeracy skills for lifelong learning.

The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests.

We can also use Naplan to reflect on how our teaching and learning programs in Literacy and Numeracy are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.

This year the State of Victoria saw remarkable results and improved on their 2019 results in all areas (Naplan wasn't undertaken in 2020). The Annual Naplan Test revealed that Victorian students’ literacy and numeracy skills did not suffer because of last year’s lockdowns.

SMDP also had remarkable results.

SMDP was above the state mean in Year 3 in Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.

Our results show a steady upward trend in Reading, Writing and Numeracy since 2018.

Writing was a particular highlight in our 2021 NAPLAN results. Students in Year 3 had remarkable results.

More than 80% of our students achieved at or above the expected level.

The staff at SMDP reflected on why our writing results were so high. They stated:

"Grammar in context that was taught to the year 3 students in Grade 1 and 2 has made an impact on their writing."

"We have a structured literacy program which focuses on building vocabulary, learning the sounds, reading rich literature, using great writers and role models"
