Cultural Family Picnic

On the 21st of October, Staughton College celebrated its annual Cultural Family Picnic. Every year, we get bigger and better - aside from our service providers, we had our first ever market stalls this year!

We were also graced by Melton's mayor, Cr. Bob Turner and MP Mr. Steve McGhie. With special guest Blayke from Melton Specialist School doing our Welcome to Country and playing a didgeridoo, we were all set for an amazing afternoon!

Special thanks must go out to our parents who supported our efforts in providing you with authentic food; Mrs. Maylene Sunga and Mrs. Rosana Clapano, for Filipino puto flan and biko.

We were also joined this year by our partners, the Western Bulldogs, the AFL, Chin Life Changing Candles, MiCare, Headspace, Odyssey House, WCIG, Melton Council, Melton Library, Melton Youth Services, Victorian Electoral Commission, Victoria Police, Foundation House, Cultural Consultant Georgia Birch, Melton Secondary School, and local weaving artist Mary Tat.

David Rodan of the AFL and Reuben William of the Western Bulldogs also came to promote a 202 program called the "Umpire Academy". Watch out for the sign-up sheet on the sports board for that one!

To see students from all different walks of life embrace their cultural backgrounds made me so proud. Representing proudly for their heritage, seeing all the families and sponsors come out to show support was incredible.

Being involved with the preparation for this event has been fulfilling to say the least. Students sacrificed lunchtimes for weeks on end to prepare for this event. Rehearsals were fun and to see students confidence grow has been amazing to watch.

All the hard work they’ve put into their performances has most definitely been worth it, they all put on such a great show for the crowd. All the great deal of encouragement and support from the school, families, and everyone involved was more then what we can ask for, it was all so amazing! The Cultural Family Picnic has to be one of my favourite events of the year, I look forward to next year's.

Student Reflections

The Cultural Picnic this year went well. There was a variety of dancers and cultures performing this year, which was good. I liked how there were many activities from numerous organisations. Overall, the day was great and the crowd was very engaged.

The Cultural Family Picnic this year was pretty good because the food was good and there were a lot of people performing. I did a dance with my sisters, Sia, Stacey, Tuputala, Easter, and Maggie.

Me and other hip-hop dancers performed and it was great! I liked the different performances form everyone. I'd like to see even more different cultural activities from different countries in the next one. My favorite thing was our dances and the cultural food.

I helped backstage and handed out food to people. It was great! I liked all the performances because they were bright and happy. Next year, I would like to see more boys perform. My favorite thing was the Samoan performances because they did well representing our culture.
