Kingston Council kindly sponsored a team of Year 9 and 10s from the Environment Team to attend the Melbourne Water kids Teaching Kids Conference.

It is an annual Environmental Conference where the theme is that kids can learn so much from each other. So around 500+ students gathered at Melbourne University to participate. Students came from as far as Darwin , Brisbane and even one team from New Zealand!

CSC’s Environmental presentation involved teaching about Victoria’s bird symbol, the critically endangered Helmeted Honey Eater.

The presentation started off with a MAGIC SHOW! Where an evil magician ( Angus Strafford) was making everything disappear….alias EDDIE EXTINCTION!!!

The crowd loved it…. but were relieved when Maggie Drpic and Leon Stephens stood up for the Helmeted Honey Eater( Uma Sapunar) and said ‘NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!THIS BIRD WONT GO EXTINCT ON OUR WATCH!

We then explained all about the bird and how close it ca,me to extinction and how there are now many measures in place helping to bring back the numbers of wild birds.

We were particularly interested in the Helmeted Honey Eater as the whole Environment team got to go on a camp in May last year and we planted a forest on rehabilitated land to increase its habitat.

At the Melbourne Uni presentation we then had games and activities, such as a giant jigsaw, predator bingo and Honey Eater territory ball game. The feedback from teachers and students was very positive.

We got to enjoy a big lunch then listen to to other schools’ presentations. After a relaxing hot chocolate and lolly shop purchases in Lygon Street, we changed for the dinner and disco.

We enjoyed the performance from an Aboriginal Girls’ College in Healesville: they did a beautiful dance to open the gala dinner.

DAY TWO was held at Collingwood Childrens’ Farm, where we learnt so much about looking after our waterways.

We are so grateful to Kingston Council for this opportunity .
