World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day

On Wednesday, the VICSEG scholars attended the Melton City Council’s Refugee Week talk. Adoralynn Papalii Seu, Roda Thangaw, Natalina Mariak, Sakir Nawaz, and Henry Lal Din Mawi were joined by Ms. Rozynski and Ms. Medina.

“My favourite part was the lady who sang. The words to her song were amazing. I also liked the refugee student who said she wanted to be a doctor because she was so confident. She wasn’t shy when she talked about the war in Iraq, and they had to move to Jordan. When she first came to Australia, she went to language school, and at first she didn’t really speak English, but now, her English is really good.”    --- Roda Thangaw

“The performance was awesome. I particularly liked the African performance because they had everyone engaged. They had people join in by grabbing people from the audience. It was good!” ---- Henry Lal Din Mawi

“The food was great. I liked the rice because it tasted like food from my country. I really liked the performance. It amazed me. I learned how people travelled to Australia to get a better life.” ---Sakir Nawaz

“I liked the girl who spoke about her journey. She was talking about how she was in Iraq, and there was war, and she moved to Turkey and stayed there for 2 years. She moved to Australia, and she found it hard to speak English. She went to language school for 6 months and she finally knew how to speak English.  And the food was nice, too.“   ---- Adoralynn Papalii Seu

“The food was fantastic because it was from different countries. The dance was good, and the kid’s stories were sad but touching. I could kind of relate to their stories. It was a great experience.”  --- Natalina Mariak

“It was great to see so many different schools and people dressed up in their cultural attire at the Refugee Week presentation at the Melton City Council. The students were really engaged in the younger student’s refugee stories as they were quite moving. It’s great to see that Melton has come to such a long time as being the granted the second intercultural city in the whole of Australia. The students all enjoyed the food and performances, and it was a great day.” --- Ms. Rozynski
